Can someone tell me how close the camping area is to the gate? I'm helping a friend next week and we're try to decide whether we want to camp there or go someplace else.

It's BLM just outside the gate. Most camp off a side road 1/2 or so from the gate. It's just desert terrain, and plenty of space for camping

Go stay in Socorro. It is a short drive and you will have plenty of time. Eat at either bar in San Antonio and you wont be disappointed.
