Stallion range

I'm heading to the stallion range for my OIL oryx hunt next weekend. If anyone has any tips or insight that would be helpful, I would greatly appreciate the help. I'm getting pretty excited!

1st hunt on the Stallion this year so they shouldn't be too skittish yet.

Let your optics do the walking for you. Some may tell you to go to the foothills and climb to a high point to glass, but you're better off to "run and gun" and cover more country by driving and glassing often.

When glassing, look for the black and white face, especially in the brush.

When they're looking at you and start to swish their tail, they are getting ready to run.

They run in a straight line which makes it easy to get around and ahead of them if you have a map with good roads marked (which they will give you). They don't do the zig-zag nonsense that deer and elk do.

Regardless of what anyone says, they are not the toughest animal in North America. They die just like everything else with a double lung hit.

Field judging - rule of thumb is if their horn tips are to the top of their back when head down feeding, you can bet they are 33-34 inches and if the tips go past the top of tue back, they are approaching the 36 inch mark. Do not make the mistake that if their horns are twice as ling as their head it's a good one. A brownie will have 15 inch horns relative to a 7 inch head.

I'll PM some specifics for places to try...

^^^^thats a lot of great info. I'll add that as long as they are standing, keep shooting. They do die like any other animal with a good hit, however, I've never seen a tougher animal on a bad hit.

I would recommend getting some shooting sticks if you don't already have some. Most likely you'll be shooting from your knees or standing. Also plenty of water In your pack and some gloves, knee pads and a good rangefinder always come in handy.

Does any know if we will be allowed to hunt on Fri. Last email I got 9/21 says we won't be able to hunt on Fri as of then. Anyone hear other wise?

You need to give Gilbert Villegas a call. He will be able to answer you question about hunting on Friday. His office number is 575-678-7909. Good luck on your hunt!

We were out last month on the youth hunt on Rhodes Canyon. During the orientation we were told we wouldn't be hunting Friday. A little more pressure but 57 of the 60 hunters tagged for a 95% success rate.

Good luck.

They will tell you at the orientation and they usually do a "courtesy" check of your vehicle each morning you hunt.

Yeah that part I know. Was just wondering if they open an hour or so before shooting time or how that works. Dad took his first day last year so didn't go back for the second day. So never got the chance to see.

We we're lucky enough to harvest this great 36 1/2" bull on opening day. Thank you to everyone who shared their insight and expirences.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-15-18 AT 10:32AM (MST)[p]Good job Mnbearhunter123. I was down there too for the hunt and you walked up to our pickups outside the gate and next to the "Head-and-tails" Taxidermy when we were transferring my bull from one truck to another.

We saw a cow or two that may have been 38-39 inches, but this was the biggest bull we saw. We estimated him at 38", but he taped out at 37 1/4". I'm very happy with him to say the least.
