Almost ibex time!

Well I was one of the luckiest men alive in the draw. As a non resident I drew one of probably 2 tags for the any weapon season. To say I'm excited would be a understatement. To pass the time I was hoping to see some pictures that people might have. As well as tips on field judging ibex or any other last minute tips. Good luck to all that drew. I hope to be posting a pic in a week or too.

Here you go! Pic was taken a few years ago on a muzzleloader ibex hunt. These goats were on a pinnacle rock formation with about 150 yds between them and the shooter. Problem was, there was 200 ft or so of up and down vertical cliff, making it impracticable to shoot one of the billy's.

Field judging is hard if you are aiming do a certain measurement. You just gotta take one that will make you happy. I tried the same thing on my hunt. At the moment I shot mine I thought he was 30?, turned out he was 39 3/4 on each side. Keep in mind it's a hazardous mountain, lots of opportunity for injuries or just wearing yourself out. So don't split too many hairs trying to count inches. If you see a nice one take him. It?ll probably measure out better than you think.

My buddy had to hire a repelling crew to get his wife's Ibex off the mountain. If you find yourself needing assistance call me at
505-203-5138 and in can get you the guys number.
Regards, Geno

I live here in Deming. Shot lots of the goats when you could get a trophy tag by shooting 2 young Billy?s or nannies. Look for a billy with 4 knobs on top edge of horns. He will be a trophy!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-18 AT 12:06PM (MST)[p]Thanks BluffGruff. It sounds like I have been doing the same as you. I have watched every YouTube ibex video atleast twice! Lol. Not sure what tag you have? But feel free to contact me after my hunt and I will give you everything I know and learn during my season.

Bowdeadly i appreciate your help. I will keep your number. I have rock climbing gear in my pack for moderate level ascends and descends. I'm a power lineman by trade, but not a experienced rock climber.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-18 AT 10:33PM (MST)[p]Well it was the hardest hunt I've done and I have hunt all over the place. I looked over more then 60 Billy's in 6 days. With 20 around this size. This morning I missed a huge billy that was with this guy. The biggest one I had seen the whole trip. When I shot, all hell broke lose with ibex running every direction. I lost sight of the huge billy but a hadfull of Billy's ran up over the top past me. Most of them brown immature Billy's and this one. I was a little frazzled myself and pulled the trigger. It was a good hunt for the most part. Not as good as the white sands oryx hunt but still fun to say the least. I wish they had somebody managing these like Gilbert does the oryx. They are a true gem and a once in a lifetime animal. From what I saw it appears the population is down from years past, as I didn't see the numbers that people had years ago. Maybe I expected too much, but I expected to see multiple herds from every glassing point. As a out of stater I do want to thank New Mexico fish and wildlife as well as the residents of New Mexico. Every time I come down here, I have nothing but good experiences and conversations with the people of New Mexico. Thanks guys and good luck in your hunting adventures,
Myles

It is a fun and tough hunt. Quality is down, but, still a really incredible hunt.

That is a real nice one for these times. They have been hunted very hard the last 10 years or so. Above average for sure.

Congratulations Myles!
If you spent six days on the rock you definitely earned him. Too bad you didn't get the big boy!

I am just curious how long that one ended up being. You can p.m. me if you don't want to share in public. Every piece of information helps!

Scouted a couple days befor the hunt. I saw lots of Billy?s but not ant monsters. Top end of the trophy billys have almost all been taken out. This one measured 41 got him at 630 yards with my savage 110 hs persision topped with a nightforce nxs 5.5x22. We hiked to the top on wed stayed up there till fri. Was the hardest most grueling hunt iv ever been on. Even after I shot him we were to tired to celebrate. Iv shot a lot of elk with my bow and I'm on cloud nine after that. Jumping high fives yelling. With this hunt that mountain will take every ounce of energy you have away from you fast. We were to tired to celebrate. Even when we got Back to camp on fri we were to tired to drink. I took a 30 pack to celebrate. Needless to say I still have it in my garage.

Nice billy! I was hoping some other lucky hunters would post. There weren't a whole lot of Billy's over 40 running around on that mountain. The whole time I was out there I only saw one that was solid mid to high 40s. It's too bad they been hammering on them as hard as they have.
