Here?s a hard issue to talk about but it needs to be said. We have people in the sport of hunting and even camping that ruin the opportunity for everyone else. We degrade our wild places by littering and then wonder why more and more of our public lands are being taken away. Come on guys please pack it in pack it out or our public lands may not be public for much longer or they will become highly restrictive. I get it you want to go out and drink beer with your buddies and drive around but please please don't ruin it for the rest of us by leaving your trash all over the place! We already have enough private and closed lands we don't need anymore! This picture was taken in 34 and I saw a lot more of it in other places there. Please guys be reputable for our sport.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-19 AT 08:27AM (MST)[p]I don't know if it's the case with your specific picture, but based on my general observations, I don't believe that hunters are mostly to blame for this. Nonetheless, I think it would improve our perceived image if we are seen as part of the solution. When I see this kind of crap, I do what I can to help clean it up. It seems like I'm almost always packing someone else's discarded beer bottles or cans out of the wilderness. Same with abandoned campsites. As good citizens, we should all make a little effort to bring back more trash than what we took in.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-19 AT 09:26AM (MST)[p]This is very much a problem here in NM AND YES WITH "HUNTERS"....In unit 2B drive up FR310 of hwy 64 towards Carracas Mesa after and during any of the deer hunts and its a beer can/bottle mine field. In the spring when the bucks start dropping antlers , 2B is completely trampled on with beer can boxes and fast food bags full of garbage! In unit 6 take a drive on 280 all the way thru 289 and its worse!!!! NM has some absolute slobs , that are "hunting"....New Mexico State police should drive these highways they probably hammer DWI/DUI "hunters"...

Seems like most of the trash I see includes beer bottles/cans. Something about beer must make folks think the world is their trash can??!

I can all but guarantee it's not bird watchers hiking and driving all around tossing beer cans. It's slob hunters. I see it all over NM. Apparently carrying it in/up full is easy, but packing it out out/down empty is too hard.

During hunting season fresh beer cans along the Forest roads are the norm. NM is much worse than other states I've been in.

Sad.

I agree. It blows my mind to find beer cans a mile from a road when I'm out hunting. A buddy and I packed out two plastic bags worth of crap on one hike during scouting.

It's simple: bring a bag if you can and pick up the litter, shame the idiots when you see them litter, and lead by example.

Agreed, it's like some people hate the very land they walk on. And unfortunately it is 'hunters', notice I didn't say stewards.

Sadly, this will be one of the lower commented on threads.

Don't let nm get to the point that we are here in ok with littering. Its a real sh#$hole. I cant believe some of the trashy thugs that I live amongst. Every time I go to nm I am so shocked at the lack of trash in the ditches and at the bottom of ravines. So PEASE New mexico stay classy...

Agree 100%. A hunting partner and I once filled his entire truck bed with trash after a turkey hunt. Most of that trash had to have been from other hunters. All this litter is a lost opportunity for hunters to set a good example for the public lands we claim to value so much.

Not littering in the first place would be ideal, but until we get to that point, the next best thing is cleaning up after the rotten apples. It's easy to carry plastic bags into the field to collect litter. I've even carried out old tires and dragged out truck parts--a great but grody workout.

NM is not alone. TX is pretty rough also. But I agree we need to try. It just gives non hunters something to point at and say SEE!!!

Beer bottles and cans are usually the most littered items you see on the roads because when these slobs are driving around drinking the last thing they want to do is get pulled over with a bunch of empty beer cans. The cops see those empty cans and then initiate road side sobriety tests.

I pick them up whenever I see them and it's safe to do so.
