License Fee Increase Legislation

I am curious to see other thoughts on this. There is a bill to increase the cost of Hunting and Fishing License. It is something I feel has to happen, just with the cost of living increasing. I know many have stated that they would not mind a price increase in order to make up the money it takes in order to sell less tags, but this does not seem like it comes with a decrease in tags given. Here is the link to the bill.

https://nmlegis.gov/Sessions/19 Regular/bills/senate/SB0382.pdf

Here is my thoughts. I know it is a little long, but wanted to touch on all of them.

? Resident Fishing ($25 to $35)- Agree
? Resident Game Hunting ($15 to $20)- Agree
? Resident Deer ($31 to $50)- Too big of jump, our deer quality and numbers are not that great. Recommend $40.
? Resident Jr/Senior Deer ($19 to $25)-Hesitate to move Jr costs up. Recommend $20. They are the future.
? Resident Senior/Handicap Hunting and Fishing ($20 No Change)- Agree
? Resident Hunting and Fishing ($30 to $40)- Agree
? Resident Jr Hunting and Fishing ($15 No Change)- Agree
? Resident Disable Vet Hunting and Fishng ($10 No Change)- Agree
? Resident Antelope ($50 TO $60)- Agree, although well above other comparable western states.
? Resident Cow Elk ($50 to $60)- Agree
? Resident Bull Elk or Either Sex ($80 to $90)- Agree, comparable to other western states.
? Resident Jr/Senior Elk ($48 to $60)- Agree
? Resident Bighorn Ram ($150 No Change)- Recommend this going up. This is a true once in a lifetime chance. I would recommend going to at least $250.
? Resident Bighorn Ewe ($75 No Change)- Agree
? Resident Barbary ($100 to $120)- Recommend no change in price. Leave it at $100, tough hunt, could go without finding any barbary, especially now that season is shorter.
? Resident Bear ($44 to $55)- Agree
? Resident Turkey ($25 to $35)- Would like to see this stay at $25, would also like to see a Jr license added.
? Resident Cougar ($40 to $55)- Would recommend this stay at $40, a lot of people buy one just in case they run into a cougar, don't know how many will at $55.
? Resident Oryx ($150 to $175)- Would recommend off range hunts stay at $150 and increase the once in a lifetime hunt cost.
? Resident Ibex ($100 to $110)- Would recommend this goes up by a lot more than $10. This is a true once in a lifetime chance, I would recommend they go to $200 or $250 (for the riffle once in a lifetime hunts).
? Resident Javelina ($55 No Change)- I would recommend this price actually goes down to $40 or $35.
? Resident Fur Dealer ($15 No Change)- I don't even know what this is.
? Resident Trapper ($20 to $40)- Big Jump, but reasonable, don't know how many coyote callers are going to buy it in case they call in a fox or bobcat.
? Resident Jr Trapper ($9 No Change)- Agree
? Resident Senior/Handicap Fishing ($8 No Change)-No opinion
? Resident Jr Fishing ($5 No Change)- Agree
? Temp. Fishing One Day ($12 to $15)- Agree
? Temp. Fishing Five Day ($24 to $30)- Agree
? Resident Senior/Handicap Game Hunting ($15 No Change)- Agree
? Resident Jr Game Hunting ($10 No Change)- Agree
? Second Rod ($4 to $10)- Agree

These are just license cost, they don't include the app fee.

I don't know where the $3 diffence is coming from though, if you look at antlope it cost $60 to apply this includes the $7 nonrefundable app fee, so the actual license cost $53 correct? I don't know why it says current price is $50. It is like this for most. I haven't been able to figure this out.

Maybe if they hadn't blown millions on new office in alb and now they are doing it in Roswel. It's BS they blew and mismanaged our money now they want more. I am against it.

They just did the same thing in Oklahoma city. budgeted 8 million to "remodel" headquarters and it ended up costing north of 20 million.

I just looked at the new OK building info online and all I have to say is that 20 million does not go as far as it probably used to.

Quite a bit, it seems, for a relatively small building that has no manufacturing, no processing, no material handling... just offices and interpretive/educational airspace. 20 million should have gone a bit farther, no?

I was involved when this building

http://www.monstermuleys.info/photos/user_photos_2019/27856fb5484abff484271adeb80518fb6dc22.jpeg

was constructed (2000) and it cost 55 million, but it was an international mfg facility, jam packed with automation, and many more features. Yes it was a while back but 20 million should still mean something, and do they need buildings like theirs anyway to complete their mission?

High cost to print those silly antler and carcass tags.

Charge full price for all licenses and tags. No more discounts.

I would like to know why they are raising the cougar tag?

Live4muleys:
Why would you want the tag price to go up for big horn. 99.9 % of the people will never draw this tag. So much money we raise is already over allocated to these animals imo.

I am completely fine with raising deer as much as they need provided they actually use the money to increases populations of the deer as well as habitat.

I do like the idea of keeping the offf range price the same and raising on range. But again what would be the point.

What are the costs increases going to? I'm all for them but let's see the fruits of this. Not increase the fees and not see any changes! Would really like these changes to affect these animals in the positive manner ASAP!

The reason I say that about sheep is because of the fact that you said. 99.9% of us will never draw that tag so it is absolutely a one in a lifetime tag. I think a true once in a lifetime tag should be more. Just my 2 cents.

Not enough of an increase on anything. These prices are ridiculously low considering what you are getting in return. The price of tags has essentially been stagnant for years while the cost of doing business keeps rising.

When you drive by and 90+% of the camps have a new pickup truck, camper trailer, ATV or side by side and a couple of silly $400 Roto-molded coolers you realize that these guys can afford a little extra for a tag. What is really funny is when they are standing in front of you complaining about the price of tags while wearing a $750 "outfit" from Kuiu or Sitka.

You ain't lying, we hunted south of Cloudcroft this September and every camp had 4 seater side by sides. We felt out of place on our little ol 4 wheeler. LOL

That exactly why we shouldn't have an increase. Money out of your pocket for taxes(license fees are taxes) impacts what else you can by. NM has one of the worse economies yet are resident license fees are already higher that other western states.

If the money was going to increase the deer herd I would be in favor the the fact is it won't. The G&F past track record proves it. They will mis manage there/our money again. They need to manage the money they have better and they won't need the increase

If the state needs more money, just raise the resident fees to equal the price of non resident fees - all your problems will be solved!

LAST EDITED ON Feb-05-19 AT 03:51PM (MST)[p]Yes Muleman , because renting from someone is so much better than owning right??? Wow!!

FACT NM has one of, if NOT THE LOWEST price for big game fees in comparison...

Hell they can triple the tag price and they can just send me one tag, one lonely bighorn sheep tag. Is that too much to ask. LOL

Divide the rent by $9,000,000 and tell me how many years it takes to break even. I know the answer.

You need to do your home work because I apply to multiple states I know what there license fees cost and I know we are already higher. Look at resident to resident prices

Nobody should buy property to break even. Equity is achieved when invested in real assets versus borrowing/renting and not ever seeing a return.

Anyways, look at the Bills author or sponsor and familiarize yourselves with other items on their agenda in the past.

Deer would be about $10 above the western states average.
Elk would be about $10 below the western states average.
Antelope would be about $10 above the western states.

Other license, Bighorn we are well below the average, Cougar would be about $25 more, Game hunting would still be below.
