What do you guys think of the new format ? I like it.
Added something I have been asking for for years... A Valle Vidal Deer hunt. I wanted a late Nov. Rifle... but for you bow Guys this will be a killer hunt. 10 tags so GL
Jack

glad they put all the weapon types under the unit instead of making you leaf around. Otherwise they increased the tags on to many hunts. Barbary are already getting hammered in the OTC area and still they dump more tags

I like the new format and some of the increase in tags. I like to go hunting.

How do you increase tags in OTC??? Gives a great hunting opportunity and barbs seem to maintaining in OTC and increasing in draw areas. Not to long ago Barbary were all over the counter and there population increased even then

Before the new OTC area opened on the bluffs above Alamogordo, a large percentage of the hunters that drew the 34 and other units tag hunted that area. Now that area is OTC, so those draw hunters no longer hunt that area during draw season. They are in other parts of the unit. And there is an increase of over 100 more tags on top of that spread out over a more dates, which I think will result in more sheep being killed.

I guess what I posted earlier was not to clear.

They're killing a couple hundred sheep on each of the hunts, just about a thousand total in 2017/18 license year, and that has increased every year I can access. Apparently, the sheep are doing really well, and I doubt the changes will do anything other than decrease crowding and increase hunt quality, which is something I think most people will like. Applying for the rut hunts in October myself, and looking forward to light hunting pressure.

I agree. I do like they broke up the hunts. Not crazy about the extra tags.

Good and bad changes.

Not happy with antelope and Valle Vidal youth bull.

Like the youth deer change and that some MB hunts are now MB/A.

Not sure about the oyrx change. Also like listing all hunts by unit instead of weapon type.

The antelope hunts will need some work. I like the lack of ranch assignments. I disagree with unlimited private land tags, that's a huge pile of bs. The season will need to be lengthened bc of the crowding in a 3 day rifle season. Also, the outfitter pool should die immediately.

What changes are there in the oryx hunts besides the dates for the McGregor hunts?

They separated Rhodes Canyon into 3 different areas. They have Rhodes Canyon, Small Missle range and Red Canyon hunts available now. More overall tags, broken up differently. I think Red Canyon is in the NE corner of the Rhodes, but I cant' figure out or find on the internet where Small Missle is. Not applying for either till I see success rates next year anyway, so I decided I dont' need to know that bad.

Brought back the old Small Missile unit.

Not sure about the increased number of tags across the board. Does it mean oryx are now "overpopulated" and trying to keep in check before a population explosion happens, or are they trying to aggressively get current numbers down, again.

Might make oryx hunting a little more difficult in the near future...

I have started looking into hunts and I was looking at the antelope. The more I look at antelope the more mad I get. They have the youth hunts at the same time as the regular hunts in most GMUs. There is going to be some very crowded public land in some places.

I have a feeling that the rifle pronghorn hunts are going to be interesting this year. Probably not in a good way either.

Who wants to bet we see a few post about "where's my ranch assignment" on the internet too?

I don't like what they did to the antelope hunt with the private land tags. Public land is still going to be a real hard draw .

"They have the youth hunts at the same time as the regular hunts in most GMUs. There is going to be some very crowded public land in some places."

Some would argue youth hunters have no business getting to have a special season and should have to hunt alongside adults that can shoot twice as far as they can and handle a weapon with more confidence.

And, a youth hunter should be happy to just shoot any antelope in late Nov or Dec even.

I say whatever...

Ill take an antelope tag in any unit alongside every kid in new mexico and be singing all the way to the prairie. Tasty creatures and I feel the tags will be very hard to draw.
