region h tags

i have a region h deer tag that i drew with 0 points. i don't know if that was supposed to happen or not, i don't know the odds but my question is this. I'm 1000 miles away in louisiana and don't know if h is all public,or part private, nor do i know how rough the country is, if horses are necessary, how many hunters are there, where to stay etc. i think i should use a guide to avoid a long hike/camping trip (expensive also considering distance) and end up eating tag soup. who should i consider if i go guided. thanks preston gray

In the year 2000 I took a bull moose in this general area.i hunted just into the forest west of Dubois,saw deer everyday.Access is good there.Do not know what it is like today but there were several deer in that area when I was there.Good Luck !

I believe if I was the OP I'd be looking for a good outfitter/guide to do that hunt like we did in G last Fall to take a lot of the problems the OP mentioned in his post out of the equation. Maybe someone who lives in that general area will chime in with some advice on a good outfitter and the quicker you can find one that's not already booked up the better. You had about a 17% chance at drawing an H tag if you didn't have any PPs, as that is what the % draw rate was in the Random Draw this year. Good luck!

Patea,
I'd strongly consider an outfitter if I were in your shoes!

From your location, and probably the fact that the first and last time you'll see the country is during your hunt, It makes perfect sense to get some help ASAP.

Like TG pointed out, you beat pretty stiff odds for a dang nice tag and long-distance DIY is going to be rough and frustrating.
