After a decade of applying, luckily drew the dream tag for this premium area buck deer tag. Yet, I will not be able to scout due to the kind of the job I have and also living 1100 miles away.
Looking for any and all the help I can get on this almost once-in-life hunt including surrendering the tag to keep the points (if it is an option) so I can get the tag for this hunt once I am retired about 3 years from now.
Any suggestions, outfitters, or private landowners would be very appreciated. I'm so excited to go chase a buck deer of my dream! Thanks in advance to all that can help.

I don't think you can return the tag and get snything for if without a mefical reason making you unable to hunt the whole season in a note signed by a doctor.

Honestly, scouting isn't a big deal on that hunt. The big bucks will be moving around looking for does and moving again for more. The year I had it about ten years ago, it seemed like the rut peaked the middle week. For sure hiking enough to look in places you can't see from the roads was worth it. The roads get pounded and watched pretty hard.

If you don't have enough time for the whole season, I would give it to the rest of the crowd the first week and go then. Just keep looking and moving until you run into a buck that makes you happy. There isn't a honey hold where big bucks concentrate, you could run into one anywhere. You don't need private access to get a good one.

Can't help you on the hunt itself, but Bud is correct in that in Wyoming you have to be dead or at death's door to turn a tag in before the season starts!

Thanks very much for the awesome help.
I am more excited as I will be there chasing the dream of my life, starting the second week of the season.
Thank you again!

I hunted it in 2010 with a friend. We ended up taking both bucks down in the low country that borders Indian land. You need to hike in a couple of miles but I think you will be very impressed. The year we hunted weather was mind with little snow. PM if you want more Intel.
Fun hunt, plenty of deer....??

I've hunted it twice and with max points I will again one day.

Let me say it's not the hunt it once was. but in 2012 they cut the tags in half ( to 50 ) and it's coming back I'm told. realistically not a trophy hunt it's a fun hunt, if a 170 type buck is below your expectations expect to come home empty handed. there are a few bigger ones taken each year but very few.

you will be hunting in some of the most scenic and impressive country in the world and I assure you even if you don't pull the trigger it will be a trip of a lifetime. I've held some much higher quality tags in other states but this is my all time favorite deer tag.

Access to private land would be sweet but not necessary. if you can hunt at all you won't need an outfitter. bring a quad if you can. weather is a major factor and will have a huge impact on your hunt. take as much time as you can and hunt later it gets better every day until it closes.

PM me if you'd like and I'll call you. I learned it in 1997 when I took a 202 non typical and I last hunted it with my wife in 2011 where she took a 150 type buck. I'll help you as much as I can if you'll report back and let me know what you found.

I hunted it last year and would do it again in a heartbeat. Lots of bucks just got to weed thrua a bunch to find one over 170. You can do just as good DIY as any guided hunt unless he has private access which very few if any have. I saw local dubous hunters having to hunt public and they havelived there since birth....hunt late as possible they will rutting like crazy....

Pray for lots of snow!

I drew the tag too. I hunted sheep in the area a few years back and probably try some elk hunting there this year as I have a general tag. There were not many deer in the area when I sheep hunted mid October, so I believe you need the snow to move them down. I camped for the sheep hunt, but probably motel it for the deer hunt. Any good places to stay?

The deer start to come down in November with or without snow, but you're right a good snow pack will help a lot.

I like the Longhorn just east of Dubois, it's out of town a mile or so and they cater to hunters. nice rooms and very reasonable.

I stayed at the stage coach last year. clean and nice rooms, hunter friendly with an annual big buck contest.. plus your next door to a good restaurant. Don't need snow but it helps. I was into 30 plus 4points a day last year with NO snow, except for a little bit on the tops of the MTN. not a trophy unit in the traditional sense, but fun with plenty of deer to look at. plenty of bucks in the 160 range. Takes some work and patience to go 170 or better. I watched 1/2 dozen 160 bucks get wacked in 2 days....one other thing if you pass up a buck expect not to ever see him again...either they get shot by the next guy or they keep moving looking for a hot doe. weekends get busy with pressure but mid week is a lot better.

My cousin hunted this tag last year, him and his buddy drew the tags. They hunted the last 10 days of the season. He said everyday there was new deer showing up, but deer where on the move. You could see a decent buck in an area one day and nothing the next. He got a great non typical grossing I'm the 190's but said he passed on lots of bucks every day.

I also have the Type 1 Any buck tag this year, and we have 3 of the WT buck tags this year too. I have been lucky enough to hunt this area 4 times since 1993 (2MD, 2WT), and it is a ball seeing this many deer. While weather certainly does help, if you don't get it just move up the hill into the trees in areas like Union Pass, Horse Creek, or Brooks Lake. There will be rutting bucks moving most of thee day, and the later in the hunt just gets better.

thanks guys, seems like this hunt is going to be a good one since I am not a true trophy hunter needing only the best. I would like to get lucky though.

Do the deer mostly migrate in from the north/ northwest or all directions?

Hunting Report:

Hunted the Buck deer the last week of the season and it is the BEST deer hunt ever for me.
A lot of bucks to choose from. I struggled a lot to pass a lot of very good buck. Even though I only harvested a 5x5 buck estimated 165", I was totally happy and satisfied. Also, met a lot of very nice people hunting for deer and cow elk there.
Stayed at Stagecoach Motel suggested by treedagain and it is a very clean Motel and located at the middle of the town with very delicious steaks from the restaurants almost next door.
It is the hunt of my life.

Thank you all very much for your superior help.

Glad you had a good time....i would have loved to have had the white stuff on my hunt. That is a neat hunt with plenty of deer to look at along with the sheep and elk. Good jobon having the hunt you wanted.

Really fun hunt and most everyone wast successful on a buck they were satisfied with. I took over 1000 pictures of 100 bucks, with many of them very good ones. I took a 6 year old buck the last day which field dressed 225#.

It was another fun hunt. You could see a thousand deer a day if you looked hard all day. Many on private land, but I had permission on some of it. One 180" buck killed the second day,, and I saw two true monsters. One whitetail 10 point that would have scored about 160"....

Looking at those bucks, I wouldn't say the hunt is coming back. Those bucks are nothing near what used to be produced by that hunt. By all means burn your points if you like but that hunt used to produce giants.

Coming back is based on comparison. my buck would have won the local big buck contest had he been entered in '97, and he only grossed 202 nontypical. so let's keep what this area's realistic potential ever was in context. the record books are not filled with entries from this area from any era in history. a lot of nice bucks did once come from this hunt for sure just not many booners .

in 2011 my wife had the tag we hunted 9 days and never saw a buck as good as the ones posted here ,so in my opinion it must be getting better.

I'll burn max points on it if I can get my number drawn. but I'll admit it's far from the best trophy deer hunt in WY.

I hunted 128 this year. Had a great but short hunt, scouted four days prior to the start of season and hunted 1 day and 15 minutes of the second. I had found the buck I tagged on opening morning but decided to pass. But that night I thought better of it. Thought he would go 180ish which was my goal. So if he came out again I would take him, he did. I know there are bigger bucks on the unit, heard of some sightings after I had tagged out, I believe there was at least one 200+ deer tagged, but based on what I had seen and the Stage Coach contest pictures from the previous couple of years I was happy with the deer I tagged. I also looked at the weather forecast, looked pretty nice, probably plenty of deer up high yet with no weather to push them down. During scouting found does up high yet so the bucks were there as well.

He was the second or third biggest buck I saw. Saw one about the same size up in the hills on Saturday but did not have the spotting scope with so couldn't be sure. Went back on Monday to get a better look but couldn't find him.

The one I saw that was clearly bigger was on a private hay field down along the highway, probably a 200 inch typical. I thought about trying to find the land owner and maybe paying a trespass fee but in the end that seemed to much like buying a deer. He would have been extremely easy to kill where he was at.

Everybody I talked to was great, loved the area and the hospitality. Same as 2013 when I got my sheep in the area. In fact the sheep and the buck were bagged about a mile apart. Would like to especially thank a fellow MM member for trying to find a big deer for me. They were hunting WT but looking a lot of muleys over as well. He can weigh in if he would like, I don't want to name him without his authorization, but thanks for the help.

I hunted the late Kiabab last fall, as far as comparison, this area had better quality deer and more visible. But as far as the type of hunting I like, I would rather hunt the kiabab because less driving. In 128 driving and spotting is the best way to cover ground and find deer. I hunted and scouted on foot into some remote areas, but when you do that you see 50 deer, when you drive you see ten times that many.

I would love to hunt it again especially if you had lots of time and could be patient and picky. Now that I have a 180 type deer, the next level is 190 type deer and I feel like that could be done in this area. I don't remember how but,if somebody wants to private message me with a email address I can send the pic and you can post.

Looks like a REALLY fun hunt! Congratulations to Colorfulife, Blank and Goldhunter for getting it done on really nice bucks.

Thank you all for the helps and recommendations of how to do and where to stay.
Totally, it was the BEST hunting trip ever for me.
I am satisfied 100% and will be your cheerleader from now on.

Thanks Blank, do you know if the big typical down along the highway was harvested? That was as pretty a deer as I have ever seen

LAST EDITED ON Dec-05-16 AT 04:32PM (MST)[p]As far as I know, he was not. That pasture belongs to the Circle O, and no one is able to get permission on that one. I had permission on several pieces along the river, but not that one. There was another that looked very similar, that I believe was taken off the CM property.

When I left the last day, a 33 1/2" buck was the widest on the board at Rene's. Several smaller heavy ones were on there, and one really nice sticker buck. Most that were taken were in that 24-26" range. Tried for the big one that Ted and Rita saw and photo'd, but we never saw him again. Estimated in the 210-215 range. The Wy Super Tag hunter was still looking for one particular buck when I talked to him at mid-day, but was going home empty if he didn't find him.

sure looks like him, I tried to get picture but didn't have the phone skope at the time, problem fixed now, just good to know there is one left for next year.

Hello- I drew a archery tag for 128 for 2021 season, Looking at a map I am targeting the northern part of the unit (Mt Kent area) . Being i have never hunted any mule deer before so this is a first for me. do you think they will be in the high country or mid to lower? i have no idea what to expect... any advice will help me, thanks!

Congrats, have fun, post pics please.

Thanks Zeke! I originally did that when I joined this forum, but I didn't receive any responses. So I thought maybe I could propose the question on an existing thread for the same unit I will be hunting.

yes sir, region L archery tag
So just to clarify, you have a Region L general tag and you bought an archery stamp, correct?

If so, Mt Kent itself is in wilderness so your not hunting that if you don't have a guide. Much of the high country in that region is wilderness so that will limit you. Never hunted the area myself so I cant be much help to you other than to let you know that the high stuff in Region L is some rough country and not to be taken lightly. Have fun, best of luck and hopefully you have a great hunt.

Yeah I spoke with the biologist for this unit and he didn't have much advice on any specific areas I should target for deer... Kinda made it sound like it was a roll of the dice on any area I choose to hunt. I will also be hunting with a friend who is a resident and will be able to act as my "guide", he is legal with the state. I am looking forward to the hunt and it will be an epic adventure!
