Archery Cow Hunt - First or Last Week of September

Hi All,

My buddy and I are archery hunting for cows in unit thirty one this season and are looking for some thoughts on timing the hunt.

We had some dates picked out but my buddies work schedule has changed and now we are looking to pick another week.

Previously we were planning on hunting the The 11th to 16th but now the options are the 4th to 9th or the 25th to the 30th.

The first week is almost no moon and working up to first quarter, while the last week is a few days past the third quarter going to basically no moon.

I'm sure the rut will likely be closer to the end of the month but as we have cow tags I'm not sure that it's going to be as critical as if we were hunting bulls. Neither of us has much calling experience either.

I imagine the weather will be a bit cooler at the end of the month which might be helpful though although I'd think there are likely to be a few more people (not likely a major issue due to the overall limited # of tags in that unit though).

Any thoughts or advice as to the pros and cons of either time period is greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to getting out there soon!

Thank you.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-11-16 AT 03:18PM (MST)[p]I'd also go later due to the holiday the first couple days in the first period and it should be cooler the end of the month to help take care of meat if you get one down. We'll actually be hunting both those weeks and the middle of September will be chasing bulls for two weeks down in AZ.
