Just got back from an archery mule deer hunt in Reg G WY. My buddy and I rented a trailer, 2 saddled horses and a pack horse to stay in back country for an extended period of time. We hunted down the Grey's River area and many of the high country basins are 3-4 miles to the base of the mountain and 1-4 miles from there to the highest peaks. The country is steep and deep. I can't say enough good things about the customer service, the horses, the gear, the instruction provided by Chad from Yellow Stone Horse Rentals. I know how to ride and saddle a horse but had a gap in the pack saddle techniques and how to care for the horses at night, how much too feed, etc. Chad was extremely helpful and our 8 day wilderness experience was one we won't soon forget.
I am a big fan and look forward to returning if point creep doesn't get crazy in this area...but that's a different story.
