Cody - mid/late October elk

I'm looking at heading to this area for an elk hunt in 2017. I know the rifle season is a month long, but I can't make the 1st 2 weeks - I'm a tax accountant - prior to October 15 is out of the question. What are those last 2 weeks like for elk? It would be with a guide with horses. How would you rate the hunt? Tough hunt? Tough dates? Dates to try and avoid? Typical weather? Any other thoughts as I try to make a decision?

First elk hunt and I'd like to bring one home - not hung up on size and score. I have whatever the max points are minus 1.

Some areas are oct.1-20. So have a area in mind?

Not for sure just yet. 53 and 55 possibly. 53 is all month and 55 is only the first 3 weeks I believe.

I'm also looking at Bob Sundeen and Trails West Outfitters. I don't know what units he's in and I know he just had a change in ownership structure of his business.

He was running in 61. I'd be looking at 61 or 63 with Wood River Ranch myself or 59 late. Don't know what it takes for points.

I think maybe the only outfitter for 55 elk would be Lee Livingston. But them outfitters find there way around.

61 is one of the better areas in the state IMO. Hadn't heard Sundeen was changing things up. Would definitely look into whoever is taking over his operation. A buddy and I took horses and went up Venus and Little Venus Ck's. when we last had the tags.

Yes, Sundeen sold. I hear great things about the new owner. He's younger than Bob and motivated, so that's always a good thing. I'm leaning towards booking with them. I'm not hung up on bull size and score, I just want to hunt this country.
