WY Deer 2017

I have MAX deer points and would like to use them in 2017 on a gun hunt. Like most I am interested in an area that will give me the best chance at an above average deer. Coming from out of state with no ability to scout except online. And at 65 not looking for any backcountry adventures since I will most likely be solo. Looking for some suggestions to help me along in my research.

Don't average your points with someone who has 1, 2 or zero. You can do better. PM me.

>to max deer pts!

If the OP wants a great hunt, see lots of bucks and do it on a 4WD type hunt, averaging with you won't work.

>JM77, what are you talking about?

One thing usually happens when someone posts with max points and isn't after a giant; jims shows up.

Maybe I'm wrong....

What he is saying (i think) is that he needs max points to get a late rut hunt. I agree 100% draw the tag and post up here and you will get the help you need.

JM77, You obviously don't know me very well! Is it possible some units don't take max pts and have super bucks? How about region G? Could there possibly be some decent limited muley units in Central Wyo where a little time, a 4 wheeler, and a little boot leather a guy could put a tag on a 180 buck and 190 isn't out of the question? Could there be a unit or 2 in lessor known units in Wyo that have B&C caliber potential where it's possible to get permission to hunt private land? There are some great options that take a bit of scouting, shed hunting, boot leather, and time behind glass to figure out!

Thanks for the PM's. Received some good suggestions. One of the late rut hunts look perfect for what I am looking for. Couple units I have looked at like 128 are still only about a 15% draw from what I saw. I need to look at a couple other units that were passed on to me. Thanks for the offers but I am not really interested in averaging my points with anyone.

Tracker12, You are heading in the right direction by researching and scouting things out well in advance of the draw deadline. A lot of guys often go with Garth or Eastman's picks. Once they draw a tag they start advertising for help. You've saved your points for a lot of years. Just remember that just because a unit has tough draw odds doesn't necessarily mean it's a great hunt with whopper bucks. I hope you have a special hunt. No worries if you don't want to average points. It's great sharing a hunt with someone familiar and knowledgeable about units they are familiar with...but it's not for everyone. Best of luck!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-16 AT 08:53AM (MST)[p]Tracker12....yoi have plenty of time to research. Pick a couple of units and go into the draw with both eyes open. No need to waste all those years with point sharing. A good scouting trip and you will be "familiar" with the unit. A late rut hunt in wyoming is pretty fun. Research...draw the tag...kill the buck you want. If you draw a late rifle you will have PLENTY of help getting you in the know and shorten your learning curve

Tracker - good luck. I will be following this one closely as I have points I want to burn in the next couple years. Please keep us updated on what you go with.

I am petty much committed to trying to draw a late season rut hunt. One hunt I have never done. Was fortunate enough to draw a Unit 38 elk archery tag last year and killed a nice 6X5 that I was happy to take. Got lots of help from this site before the hunt. Hoping my deer hunt will go as well. I have not rifle hunted deer for 15 years or so concentrating on archery. Its time to get the rifle back out. Thanks for the tips. I had surgery 3 weeks ago on my left arm ulnar never so I have plenty of time to do a little research.

I too am in your same boat with max deer and antelope.

I feel fine with sharing Max on a Group appl for 'G' and having those in my group hunt with total freedom when and where they want (bow then rifle if needed) as I have my own area's.

I'm in no rush to dump my Antelope points as I am saving them for when I can't hunt elk or deer as age catches up with me! haha

What ever you decide----enjoy and go for it.

Robb that's a pretty good plan you should be able to draw any Antelope unit you want by then.
