i went to toprut and looked under special draw non res and the map shows unit 38 type nine archery harder to draw than the rifle tag, is that accurate.also it shows units 49,33,120.23.108,17 able to draw with six points in special draw. i thought it took more than that. if thats accurate which of the latter units is best or is 38 better than any of those I'm sorta confused on which unit to use my six points on and i aint gonna wait for more points with the creep getting worse but i will pay the special fee thanks for any input

LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-17 AT 09:11PM (MST)[p]What you have mentioned is accurate on all accounts according to the odds on the G&F website. I'm only familiar with one of those latter units and would not recommend it since it doesn't have that much accessible public land that holds elk.

38 is tougher to draw during archery because the majority of elk move entirely out of the area onto private land, Montana, or areas that are super tough to get to during rifle season. As Topgun mentioned, the other units have a lot of private land so have better draw odds.

Another reason 38-9 is harder to draw is that it's one of at least 3 units you can't draw a Type 1 and hunt during archery season - You have to have Type 9 to hunt archery. On top of that 38-9 has had a ton of discussion on the internet.

Toprut.com takes the information the states release and put it in the easy to understand charts you saw. I like their kml maps too.

Look at the trends over the past several years to determine if you have enough points, the amount of public land, and the success rates for each unit and hunt. Toprut can give you all of that. If you don't know the areas opt for an area with the best public access.
