i know most on this site are diehard diy guys but i saw on idaho forum a post about plane rides into wilderness areas. are plane and chopper rides legal as access to backcountry areas. I've never heard of this till i read that post. how in the hell do you land a plane in mountains. are they talking about choppers and just calling them planes. just curious?

Do you mean wilderness or Wilderness Areas? There are no landing strips that I know of, at least in Wyoming, in any Wilderness Areas.

Most of the ones I know about in the Wilderness areas (Frank Church)sit on mining ground or ranches that are deeded ground. Established run ways are on maps and are legal to land on.

The frank church ones sit on grandfathered ground that used to be ranches for the most part that were privately held, until they were forced to sell and relinquish those lands to the government during the wilderness act in the 60s.....No you cannot land a plane in any wilderness area in wyoming as far as i know of.

The only I rememeber seeing is if ya scout from a plane then its a 24 hours till ya can hunt...

But I have never heard people landing in wilderness. I bet it would be a big fine unless a emergency landing was a must..

I am from the Challis area and there are 8 strips within the Frank Church. Some are on private, some are state and the rest are Forest Service strips. To correct some of the mis information the FC came official in the early 80's not in the 60's when the wilderness bill was first enacted. Planes and helicopters can land at most any of the airstrips if they have permission. All of theses were grandfathered in as they existed before the FC became a wilderness. MiddleFork Aviation is the only business I would use as some of the strips are short and all of them are dirt. Just can't hunt the same day as flying. Hope this helps.

I remember hearing stories back in the day about a few outfitters flying in there to drop off loads of rock salt and supplies for their camps...

I can't remember all the details, but years ago here in Cody, Wy a guy got busted for hunting elk with his helicopter on Rattlesnake Mountain. The took his chopper! Maybe if you searched it you could find the details.

No more scouting from the air in Wyoming, Michael. Air transport is legal and you can hunt the same day.
