164 Deer

I'll be passing through 164 during the Oct 1-Oct 10 hunt dates and was wondering what your thoughts and opinions are on this unit. I have passed through on my way through Worland several times and have seen great bucks, just not a lot of deer. I'm a non resident and will be hunting M probably the last week of October but seeing as how I'll be near 164 during its season dates I figured I'd try my hand at hunting those badlands, which to me appear forsaken by nearly all vegetation and probably god himself.

The unit is roughly 16 miles by 22 miles (ROUGHLY) or about 225,000 acres. Its predominantly BLM and what little vegetation there is appears to be in Worland or near Winchester. There are some WIA's that I'll try first and see if there are any big boys passing from those fields into the desert as part of their daily routine.

This is going to be a tough hunt where I assumed I'll see few deer but as I have nothing else to do during that time I'll be hitting it hard.

Try the southern part of the unit within a mile or two north of BLM 1404 that goes all the way up to Worland around the south side of the airport over there. What is called "Devils Slide" that goes east/west is pretty good to at least see deer, but if you see more than 5 or 6 a day you're doing good based on the last time I hunted it a few years ago. IMHO that's where there is more vegetation and water to support what few deer are in 164 away from the private lands over by the river near town. You might even see me over there if we fill antelope tags quickly and have some time to hunt 164 the last few days of that short hunt before we start elk hunting on 10/9. Good luck!

I've seen two bucks in 164 on the highway from worland to tensleep. Both were 27+ wide two points. Spindle horned. I'd have shot either because they are cool.

You would shoot a 9 inch two point so this doesn't surprise me.

Don't rag on my buddy Travis, LOL!
