Type 3 whitetail and general

Can you draw a Type 3 whitetail tag in the draw and then pick up a general deer tag after the initial draw as a resident?

"A person may apply for and receive a maximum of one (1) limited quota Type 1, Type 2, Type 3 or general deer (resident) or region general deer (nonresident) license through the initial license drawing period. After the initial license drawing is completed, any person may apply for and receive a second full price deer license, provided that at least one (1) of the licenses is a limited quota Type 3 any white-tailed deer license in the proposed leftover drawing or on a first-come, firstserved basis. However, no person shall receive more than a total of two (2) deer licenses valid for the taking of antlered or any deer, of which not more than one (1) shall be valid for antlered or any mule deer in any one (1) calendar year."

Yes, that is allowed since one is a Type 3.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-10-17 AT 09:18PM (MST)[p]In 2014 I drew a type 3 "whitetail tag." When I tried to buy a general tag at the sporting goods store they would not let me.
I called the g&f and they said sorry you're out of luck. I got online and luckily the system let me buy a general deer tag. About a week later I received a certified letter from g&f stating I must send one of the tags back. I sent the whitetail tag back and I haven't applied for a type 3 since. I hope it works out for you. Let us know if it does. [font face="verdana" color="green"]

This is the current language I find in regulation:

Section 4. Issuance of Deer and Antelope Limited Quota Licenses, Reduced Price Doe/Fawn Licenses, Elk Limited Quota Licenses and Reduced Price Cow/Calf Licenses.
(a) For deer, no person shall apply for and receive more than one (1) full price deer license (General, Type 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 9) through the initial drawing. After the initial drawing is completed, any person may apply for and receive up to two (2) full price deer licenses provided that at least one (1) license is a Limited Quota Type 3 any white-tailed deer license. However, no person shall apply for and receive more than a total of two (2) deer licenses valid for the taking of antlered or any deer, of which not more than one (1) shall be valid for antlered or any mule deer.

I have had a type 3 and a general deer tag almost every year without one single problem.

Anytime I draw a type 3 tag I always get a general to. Never had an issue

You have to get the general in the draw and then buy a type 3 in the leftover draw I believe. I do not think you can get a leftover general tag.

We have some huge whitetail/muley hybrids here in western Wyoming. I wonder if a guy could kill one with a type 3 whitetail tag??

The General resident tag is OTC, not in the LQ draws. The Type 3 tag can be obtained in the draw or as a leftover if there are any.

There is so much misinformation amongst residents out there on how the type 3 works, it never ceases to amaze me. Honestly, it's one of the best secrets out there even though all the information is laid out for everyone to read.

Sorry, this ^^^ is not true. It amazes me that so many can't read and understand regulation. There is no order in which you have to obtain a type 3 and a general license.

jm77, You are not making it any easier for me to draw a type 3 tag.

Misunderstandings like those above are a big reason why I so often get to chase whitetails after mule deer seasons have ended.

Oh believe me Steve, I get it! But you know I am an equal access guy; one reason I hate complimentary licenses like in the One Shot.

This thread won't harm your chances I think. I guarantee that some that read this still won't grasp it and add to that the G&F employees themselves that don't understand it. I will say this; MM is the reason the world knows about G, that's for certain!!

I suspect you are right. Add to that the rampant confusion regarding reduced price cow/calf tags and I should have plenty of tags in Wyoming. Besides I have decided to get my whitetail fix in MT this year. I heard a rumor about bucks behind every tree in the Custer NF. I bet I am the only one hunting it this year. If its as cherry as I think it will be I might start a scouting service up there so people don't have to waste a bunch of time hunting before they pose for pics.

I miss read it. It's draw type 3 then buy a general. Got ahead of myself

But you can buy a type 3 if there is a leftover in another area if ya didn't draw your initial area. Pretty rare to see a extra anymore
