i have a region m deer tag and was considering applying for a unit 47 elk tag in the leftover draw because the units in region m that i can hunt are close if not partially in unit 47( i haven't checked the exact boundaries yet).
what i was wondering is unit 47 a decent enough unit that i might have a opportunity at a elk and maybe a deer also toward the end of oct. i think the deer units i can hunt run till the end of october and are just east of unit 47. I've never been in this area and have no idea about the terrain, hunter pressure, animal populations etc. can anybody shed some light on this combo hunt? thanks preston gray Oh yeah, I'm gonna bring my 11 year old son along , is the terrain to rough for him? he's a pretty good hiker.

I've hunted out in that area since 1994 and every year since 1999. Deer unit 39 in Region M is just to the east of the elk unit you're talking about, but the season is bucks only and is only from 10/15 to 10/25 because of the low deer population. None of Region M is within that elk unit. Elk would be a pricey tag with probably not a real good chance at one on the public land in that unit. Your boy should have no problem hunting with you and I'd be more worried about Pop than him, LOL! Good luck, be safe, and have tons of fun with the boy! Oh, and take all the supplies (food, gas, water, spare tire and tire chains) you need to camp out for however long you plan on hunting because it's desolate country that is a long, long way from any services.
