hello all, I drew 128-1 and am looking for any info that I can get on this unit. I read a lot about this hunt prior to applying and was fortunate enough to have drawn the tag and now I need to try and harvest a trophy. Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated. Rick

Hunt the last week, hike into areas with no access, if you see one you want take him. Don't often get a second chance on most bucks due to the migration. Fun hunt PM me if you would like

I haven't looked into it myself, but is there access to that area through the reservation?
I read good things about the hunting in the unit though.

Happy hunting and good luck.

You had better not get caught going anywhere on or through the Reservation that isn't a state of County maintained road or you're in deep dodo with their own Tribal Police and justice system and it ain't pretty!

Hunted it last year, and had fun. Read my 2016 HAC for blow-by-blow and pics. Get on thew WGFD website and look at the Spence-Moriarity WMA maps. We will be there this year with 4 WT tags. Good luck

I have already read about your hunt last year it is one of the reasons why I applied for this unit and I am glad you reached out. The buck you got last year was a stud and I hope i shoot his twin. I have already booked a room at the Stagecoach and I am going to order maps of the area. Hope to hook up with you in Dubois.

Fun hunt. I would watch the weather. If there are some early storms and you have some flexibility, the first week could be good too. I got my buck last year on the second day. Scouted the three days prior to the opener.

Gold hunter you shot a stud too. Do to my work schedule I will only be able to hunt the last 10 days of the season. It's 990 miles from my house to Dubois so I won't be able to make more than one trip hopefully with the information that you fellows share with me I will be successful.

Wow-- You beat the odds -- a super tag overall-- the very first comment I read sent to you from
Wapiti willy hit the bulls eye, hunt last 10 days & if you find one you, drop him right there, do not think about it, you will never see him again !!! They are just passing thru the area-- fast ! Big bucks can appear most anywhere in unlikely places. I had the tag some years ago & spent a lot of time there checking out many areas, saw some good bucks, but never saw the monster I wanted, that 200 buck I sought, so I ate tag soup. Best buck I saw likely was just barely a 180, saw lots bucks up to the 150--160 mark. Hunt the areas all around Table Mountain -- lots of glassing there & some good bucks too. Another good area--- the areas all around Whiskey Mountain, especially the scout camp area, the rutting bucks put on a show there & like that area a lot, every day different bucks & no one hunts it generally speaking, got the place to yourself most days. Lots of fun to watch that area.

The area is not what is used to be trophy wise, according to locals anyway. Another wild card, the private land wheat field right beside the town dump & IN town too--the deer love that field & I saw a hunter drop a big buck right on the fence line that adjoins the B L M Land on one side, all legal too, at daylight . He killed it on the B L M Land & drove right up to the buck & loaded it in his truck, with the help of another man.

Glad to tell you about my experiences there if you want. Have a great hunt, lots of fine areas to hunt. Best of Luck on this Tag of a Lifetime ! Jerry Gold--- E M : [email protected]

It will be an interesting year on 128. I've hunted it twice and with max points I have been keeping a close eye on it. with max points I think every year will be the year, but it wasn't this year for me.

Last year was the best in years, even at that few true trophies were taken. this year will most likely be down somewhat, the winter kill wasn't awful but it was bad according to everyone I talked to.

The best advice I can give is this, you're going on a fun hunt in some of the most beautiful country in the world with very limited hunting pressure. that said, this is not a true trophy hunt as the hype would lead you to believe. few if any booners are taken on this hunt that's just a fact. a few very nice bucks will be taken and mostly 160-170 bucks will make up the rest.

Have a great time but don't get hung up on finding a monster or you'll ruin it.

I can 2nd cocopuffs thoughts. I hunted it in 2015 and killed a good buck Mid 180's
Saw 40 4pt's in 1 day. Mostly in the 160 range. Passed up a buck over 30inch 175 buck, just took pics..along with 5-6 bucks in the 170-175 range. a fun hunt that will amaze you with deer #s and rut activity. Have fun and shoot the buck you want..

You might not like Ochoco's politics, but to say he doesn't know anything about the unit is crazy. If I remember right he killed a buck near 200 out of there years ago before the point system. Sounds like he has been on that hunt at least 3 times that I know of, but he can't know anything about it since he isn't from Wyoming.

+1^^^ I don't often agree much with 440(Ochoco) but his assessment of 128 is right on.

Jm77 i wish that was true. The reason i posted was they were good bucks on public ground in a sea of private. And i would rather see a
public hunter kill them than a paid hunter

A public guy did kill the 180ish buck or his twin. i don't know how he would feel if i posted it. Send me contact info if you want to see it

I hunted six and a half days with my brother Willy and my friend Chris accompanying me. As everyone had
mentioned we saw tons of deer. The amount of 20?-24? bucks were amazing. The country was beautiful and we met some really nice people. I ended up killing a 4x5 that had a 28 1/2? outside spread, he had the largest rack of any of the bucks that we saw. The deer, elk, antelope and sheep herds we were incredible. Thanks to all of the advice that I got from you guys.

Nice buck you did good.

I'm glad to hear you saw a good number of younger bucks I have been worried about what last winter had done to them.

Were the deer down on the lawyer ranch pretty good or did you have to look higher?

Congrats on a nice buck! Glad you had a fun hunt. I enjoy going over every year, tag or not. :)

Thanks guys. OchocoKid the deer started at the pavement when you turn off the highway and went as far as I could go up in the Shoshone NF. The smaller bucks were chasing does throughout the day but the bigger bucks seemed to be early and late. I did a fair amount of walking and found two deer carcasses and one elk. There were fawns still feeding off of their mommas and hundreds of deer. I saw a picture of a 221? buck and heard of two more. I saw hunters shoot little three and four pointers and they were happy as hell. Elk hunters were everywhere and the whitetail hunters were doing good as well. Like blank said, tag or not I will go back to enjoy the sights and look at all of the animals.

Sounds like the deer are doing well. I knew last year was good but this year I was concerned. the last time I was on this hunt was I 2011 with my wife when she had the tag and it was nothing like that. very few deer anywhere.

You can't get enough of that country can you ? it's addictive . the deer quality is not the best I've ever hunted but the experience is tops.

I don't know how to post pictures or I'd put up the buck I took in '97 on this hunt. it was something else back then.

Thanks for posting it.

I wish I had better pictures but that was back in the film days we only took a couple and they were pretty poorly set up. it doesn't look like it in the picture but he's a 202" 6x7 .

I love hunts like 128 you never know what's going to come down from the high country that time of year.

Hey, think positive. There was a random tag and only 350 applicants! Should be a lock for next year. :)

Yeah the random odds are pretty tough. but the whitetail only tag is not too hard to draw.

I'm going to be through there in a couple weeks I'll see what the bucks are up to then.
