i drew a 125 elk tag and it looks like the unit is checkerboard offset public land. i was wondering where the public access points are and if a person could hike in and find elk. I'm not a trophy hunter but do not want a hassle with ranch owners who think they control the whole unit. does anybody allow access for a trespass fee in this unit. if u know anyone who does i would appreciate the contact info. i can't afford a guided hunt but i can't come from 1200 miles away and have no access. thanks preston gray

Should go onto the Wyoming access yes program site and look for the elk mountain HMA.
That is a sizable hunter management area. But those HMAs require a permission slip in advance to hunt them. I think they can be applied for online.
I have not hunted there ,and don't know anyone who has. So can't help about where to find elk.
A call to the local warden that's in that area is a real good idea.
Looks like a tuff place to hunt for a guy that hasn't done some homework on access first.

Hope it works out for you.
Good luck.

Good thing you are not trophy hunting, the HMA allows antlerless harvest only.

There are still 125-1 tags available if anyone else is interested.

If you look at the land status map south of the freeway there is only a few accessible mile square pieces of ground. Not sure about north of the freeway. I bet there is less than 10 trees on the BLM ground. Nowhere to to more than a mile

That is not sounding like a good situation for a bull hunt.
Hope you can find another access to public. There is a small walk in area I saw.

Good luck, you might get help from the area warden.

540acre walkin that is cow only. Most of the ground south of freeway is outfitter controlled. The HMA will hold elk later in season but is limited to cows amd if you draw a access permit. And leave real quick when the shooting starts. Very open country. One herd spooks and it is a domino effect taking most of the elk with them. Call the warden and he will be honest with you and your chances for a bull

You may find access, but it is doubtful That's a tough hunt in a tough area. We have a place in Elk Mountain and I won't even get that license.

As has bee stated, there are a few elk that get on those BLM pieces or the HMA, but they never stay long. All you can do is try. Be there early each day and hope for tough weather to push the elk off of the mountain.

Best of luck and hope you get one.
