I have 8 points wondering what the best unit would be for a good buck I'll have my 8 year old son in tow I want him to see a lot of deer but also want a chance at a good buck any suggestions thanks for any advise in advance

Good luck seeing a lot of deer and getting a good buck on the hunts that will probably be suggested with an 8 year old son along! The best place IMHO for a good buck is still in Regions G & H, but you won't see a lot of deer and having the boy along would probably not be a good idea on a hunt like that, as well as the latter migration hunts up north toward Cody.

>Decent buck ( 2 ft 4
>pt )

Can I assume you mean a buck with a 24" spread? If you do that may be hard to accomplish even in the best units since you're probably talking about a buck that is in the 170s or better and they aren't behind every tree. Have you ever hunted mule deer before? This is a buck that we got out in Wyoming this past season. He's 24 1/2" wide and is the best we've seen in the unit that I have hunted every year since 1999.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-17 AT 01:23PM (MST)[p]>Good buck mike!! You or john?

John and I were sitting together opening night of deer season and for some reason the good bucks were still coming out well before dark and some were still running together. We were watching several nice bucks at about 5PM, which was a good 1 1/2 hours before dark. More kept coming out of the one canyon nearest us that is private property where they like to bed. Over the next 15 minutes or so we had 8 branch antlered bucks on the hill above us at about 200 yards feeding contentedly like it was summer! None were what we were looking for, as we had seen two shooters that would go in the 170s near there in September and early October. As we were watching them I noticed another deer below the bunch working it's way up the hill and it took it about 5 minutes to get up high enough for us to see it good and when he raised his head we both said "holy #####", LOL! We had not seen him before, so we looked him over real good and John asked if I was going to shoot him. BIG mistake, as I told him I'd pass because I thought a couple we had seen during scouting were better and it was just the first night of our two week season. John decided he was good enough for him and let him have a .270 accubond in the ribs when he turned broadside. The buck ran back to the east and stopped about ten yards from the private property where he'd come from. He was wobbily, but since he was so close to the private property I told John to shoot him again. He shot just as the buck fell over and the shot hit the back of his lower jaw and that is why jm77 mentioned the wound you can see in the picture. Since we had another hour until shooting time was over we sat right where we were hoping one of the other good bucks would show up, but all we saw were a couple more small ones. Right as shooting time was up we went up and I took a couple pictures of the buck where he died and that's why it's almost dark in the picture. He was even better than I had thought and I never saw anything close to that buck the rest of the season and ended up eating my tag. To remember that night I think I'm going to take some pictures after John gets the pedestal mount of him back next year and have one blown up and framed for my man cave here at the house.

>Yessir been hunting since I was
>knee high to a grasshopper

But have you ever hunted mule deer, as if you haven't and want one like you mentioned IMHO you may have your target set a little high if you've never shot one before. I'm just trying to get a grasp of your experience or inexperience hunting them in order to offer advice is all.

>Last 2 years

I guess that qualifies you as experienced, LOL! Good bucks in anyone's book---well done and Congrats! If it wasn't for you wanting to take the boy along with you, I"d say go up high in Region G the middle of September for a good chance to equal or better those two in your pictures. It's a tough hunt though and going on horseback is your best bet to get up high and not kill yourself in the process. Good luck on whatever you decide!

I know we are probably a little tougher out here in the west then maybe some flatlanders are from back east lol, but my boys have been at or above 10,000 feet with me every year one of them started at 9 years old the other went in when he was 7. The 9 year old now is 15 and has made well over a dozen trips in scouting and hunting all on our backs except one trip we went in with horses. It all depends on how physically and mentally tough your son is, and the type of gear you both have. If you think he would be up to it then by all means go for it! If you could be flexible on your dates to hunt that would make it even better for you as the weather up high like that can make it almost unbearable at times. Good luck and happy hunting.

Tknez---The weather that can hit up in G &H along with the late migration hunts up around the Cody area was exactly why I offered my thoughts on having an 8 year old along. A 31 year old friend of mine that is a fitness nut did a solo deer hunt opening week this past season up in the Hoback and thought he was going to die from hypothermia when he got all wet and then the weather abruptly changed to a blizzard. He has all the best stuff money can buy, but you are really taking your life in your hands going up into those high areas if bad weather hits and lasts for any amount of time.

>Sounds like he needs to learn
>how to build a fire...

That's exactly how he got dried out and warmed up and it was a solo hunt and not a guided one that takes care of you like you stated on another thread that you take every year!

LOL, as I have only been on two guided hunts of my own in the 65 years I've hunted! One was a horseback hunt in 1994 and the other was a horseback hunt in Region G in 2015. All the other hunts I've been on where I've had a tag have been DIY!!!
