2018 Elk or Deer?

I have 11 points for each deer and elk....

Not sure how the time went so fast, I must be getting older..lol

Elk...I want a really good archery hunt! and maybe a follow up with rifle if all fails. This is DIY for me. Leaning away from 7 due to land access, but should I? I have couple good bulls already, would like another though...Looking at 30's and 124. Should I be looking at the bighorn units? Want a realistic chance at a 330 bull or better.

Deer.....ya, I know G or H....from what everyone says....
Anyone willing to chime in on other units? 101-102 Maybe?

I know AZ and Eastern NV a bit if you want to exchange.

PM is probably the best way avoid offending everyone

Thanks all

You already mentioned where I would go for deer when you said you know about Regions G and H. The unit I would put in for and get for a good archery elk hunt with tons of public land, lots of elk and good bulls, would be 45-9 in the Big Horns and if you have enough vacation time I'd hunt the entire month of September if I had to. However, that tag does not allow a followup with a rifle in October. The units in the 30s you mentioned don't allow Type 1 tags to hunt the archery season at all like 45 -1 does with an archery permit for the last two weeks of September. However, be aware that the unit gets a lot of pressure from the Type 1 tag holders along with the Type 9 tag holders that last half of the month.

Units 30, 31 and 32 all offer archery hunting on the type 1 tag, you just need to buy the archery license. ($30.00 for non-residents) All three units offer a great hunt and some big bulls. Scouting and learning the roads will greatly increase your chances at a big bull. Good luck in the draw.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-17 AT 12:24PM (MST)[p]We are hearing the G&F is going to do away with the type 1 tag holders being able to hunt the archery season in unit 45. This was from a game warden we spoke to last week. I can only hope that actually happens!

That would be a great move on their part to cut the hunting pressure down those two weeks and allow the Type 9 people that used a ton of PPs to draw the tag to have a great hunt the entire month. The archery permit that Jake alluded to for the Type 1 tag holders will be $70 now along with the increase in tag fees for 2018 that was adopted this year.

>by at least a year
>or two!

That would just be a guess like many are saying the price increase will cause people not to apply, while others are saying that more will apply thinking their odds are going to be better because there will be a decrease in applicants. You can't tell anything until AFTER the draw is over to see what will happen in 2018 or any other year as far as that goes! A bad winter weather will also cause the same affect when some will say don't wait to apply, as there are plenty of bucks out there, while others will say wait for several years for the herd and good bucks to come back.

In the same boat with 11 each...And looking at Archery! Still waiting to hear about Winter issues with a couple of the Deer units...

Is 11 max? Max points are needed for a SLIM chance at deer 101 and 102 and the elk units you mentioned...

It'd be a special kind of special to draw a 45-1 tag as a non ressy and then they remove the special archery option.

Yep, that's where the early elk draw fails.

Well, lots of NR are sitting at Max pts and pondering if 4% odds in unit 124 is a viable option.....jury is still out for me. I'm 58 and want to draw before I'm to old to give Em heck . Think I'll burn my points on antelope this year and use that trip to scout out the 30's or 22 for elk .
