NR Max Points ELK - Guide/Unit Recommendations?

Guys, I'm a NR who has hunted WY almost every year for the past 30 years - almost exclusively archery elk on a GEN tag. One of my best buddies has taken a different approach and has built up max points and saved money for that "once in a lifetime" type of hunt.

He's getting to the point where he is likely to draw a great tag. The problem is that he's coming to me for advice on the unit, and I'm just a "general unit" guy. Truth be told, I'm hesitant to give advice knowing that he'll be burning many years' worth of points.

I know that recommendations will vary based on a bunch of factors, so I'll take a stab at answering the questions and describing his expectations (and please feel free to tell me his expectations are just unrealistic in WY).

Weapon - Rifle. He is capable and experienced. The dude is very fit, and will definitely put in the effort. He's an experienced backcountry hunter and not afraid to put in the effort. He has never hired a guide, but he knows that many of the top units are in wilderness or require access that only a guide can get him. So, how much is he willing to spend? I honestly don't know, but he has been saving money for this hunt for years because he knows it won't happen again.

Personally, I've always been fascinated with the thoroughfare hunts, but I really don't know if that's the best option. He's really looking for a deep backcountry hunt, but if a private land hunt (not high fenced) is a better option, he'd certainly entertain it (knowing that means more $$).

Lastly, the big question: what are his expectations for a bull. I really don't like to throw around numbers, and I'm not going to field judge a bull down to 1/8". I know a great bull when I see it. That being said, he has killed a lot of bulls in the 290-310 range, so he's really looking for a good chance at something bigger: 350-360+.

In short, if you could write your own ticket, and you'd saved your money, and were ready to get a guide for a hunt that you'll never be able to do again, what would you do?

Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated - because then I can blame someone else if he eats tag soup :)

Thanks fellas

No matter where he goes a 350-360 bull is a tall order to fill and it will probably take a guided hunt up in the mountains west of Cody to come close to what he's looking for. It's probably either that or a guided hunt on a ranch like the Wagonhound down in unit 7. IMHO if it were me I'd do the Cody area hunt and eat a tag before I'd go on a private ranch, but that's just me.

If I had spent the last decade building points and really wanted a backcountry hunt I would look towards unit 61, 62 and 63. Leaning towards 61. That area and hunt type is the epitome of a backcountry elk hunt. No way I would waste max points on a private land elk hunt. Lodges and pickup trucks are nice but if he wants to have an experience and adventure as well as hunt great bulls then pick 61. I don't really have an outfitter recommend but I hear good things about Trails West.

Trails West Outfitters; Wood River Ranch Outfitters; would be worth him checking into. The thorofare is a general tag, so I dont think thats worth his look right now. That being said, he is still a small chance at drawing any of the late season hunts outside of Cody even with max points. I would suggest the he strongly consider the units mentioned above and the two outfitters I mentioned are 2 of the best that i know of. I dont think he can have a bad hunt with them.

I would use my points on a late season tag. If he wants the therofare hunt let me know I can recommend a good outfitter for that. And for the late season hunt I can recommend a good outfitter also. With a late season tag you can get one heck of a bull. Im talking about passing on 350-370 class bulls, if the weather hits right.

No high fence hunting in Wyoming other than the chase elk ranch by Sheridan,wy. They mostly do disabled hunts for veterans to get elk, deer, antelope, buffalo and ibex

Very helpful information - thanks guys! When I was in this situation last year, I talked with Trails West, but just hadn't done enough homework to recommend anyone. It's good to see them mentioned again.

The Thorofare is on my bucket list but that's a general tag so blowing max points on it would be insane or worse.

If I had max points again I would hold out for 59 late or 56 late. nothing else . period. I've hunted 59 and my hunting partner hunted 56 . if you're willing to hire an outfitter they are 2 of the best elk hunts in the world without question. and if you desire you can pack back into the Washakie .

If you want more information about outfitter suggestions PM me .
