LAST EDITED ON May-10-18 AT 05:03PM (MST)[p]What size of bull Moose should I hold out for on this unit. I saw plenty of bulls over the years in this unit, but is there a possibility for a giant? I only had 4 points, so obviously I didn't expect to draw.

I spend a lot of time in 24 and it has been a while since I have seen a giant. I would say a mid to high 30? bull is very doable. A low 40? bull is possible. I see the better bulls off the national forest on private chunks. To me any bull in the 40?s is a giant but your definition may be different. Either way you will have a great hunt and will see a lot of bulls. I am happy to pass along any info on bulls I see during the summer

I think mule creek has it right on the expectations in this unit.

I drew it in 2015 and had a good solid hunt. My Dad drew it in 2012 and we had a good hunt that time as well.

I wouldn't be passing a bull that was approaching 40" myself.

I killed this one:

Buzz?s bull is a top end bull for 24. In particular because of the width of the palm. I see a lot of bulls with very little palmation. A bull with palms like Buzz?s bull is what you are looking for

My son-in-law with his area 24 bull the same year as Buzz. It was the best he saw and he put a lot of time in. 40" spread

Those are all great looking bulls. I was lucky to draw a Montana moose tag last year near Libby and spent 13 long hard days without ever seeing one. I would be happy to just see a few and be able to put a decent one on the dinner table. If anybody has any tips or suggestions I loved to hear about it.

Congrats Roadless!! Pulling a tag on the random draw! Nice! I'm in portions of that area every so often, hell its only 30 minute drive, lol. I've seen some patterns. Those are all nice bulls shown above and you never know when a big one will show up especially if some of those off-forest bulls decide to wander upstream while looking for cows. I work with some guys that elk hunted in a particular portion up there late October last year and saw some bulls that drew their attention. Also my good buddy drew the only sheep tag for that area this year so I'll be in that area on/off this summer. Feel free to shoot me a PM anytime.

Headed out in a couple weeks so I thought I bring this thread back up in case anybody had a sighting to fuel the fire. Got my two oldest sons tagging along to act as sherpas if we happened to find one.

My son and I have both hunted 24 (dating back to 1976 when I first hunted moose there).
Buzz and his dad, along with JM77's son-in-law, took top-tier bulls for the unit and I'd never pass a bull like that in 24.

I tried to hunt today for Moose, but the hole unit 24-1 is virtually closed because of the fires. This will be a bad year to have a moose tag. I might not get a chance to hunt them if the fires burn until the snow flies.

Hang in there. You'll be fine. See what happens in a week. I think a lot of that closure depends on if the Marten fire takes the North Piney drainage or not. Strong south winds today is forecasted, not westerly so that's better for that drainage. I wouldn't be surprised to see that area of the closure from North Piney south re-open after they figure out what the fire is doing on this east side of the mountain range...hopefully..

I hunted 24 about 10 years ago and took a 38" bull. the only bull I saw in 10 days.

The one Buzz's dad took is far above average from what I've seen.

Can you hunt the 25/24 border through BLM or a road on 25? Definitely don't want you to put your life in danger, but I have seen a couple of moose come off of private onto the edge of 24 where it is more sage low country.

I am headed to area 23 for moose next week and the fires have me concerned. I have thought about leaving my rain gear at home. That would surely bring on the rain.?

Roadless got his bull last Saturday. It was about 34" wide and a pretty nice one, the second biggest we saw out of about 20 bulls sighted.

The firsts one we saw was also the biggest one. It had a body like a Sherman tank and antlers well over 40" wide, but hardly any palms. We let it go because the antlers were not impressive and I shot one like that a few years ago that was 10 years old and tougher than shoe leather. You couldn't chew it after 48 hours in a crock pot.

We spent 1/2 day in the Roosevelt burn area and saw a lot of moose, but the bulls were all small and a long way from the road. Since there were only two of us, and no horses, "close to the road" was the most important consideration. We went back to the Sherman tank area and found his bull there.
