Elk area 100

Hey fellas,

I managed to pull an area 100 tag this year and was wondering if anyone in the know, or prior tag holders would want to chat about the unit? Archery season? Roads?...

I know it's not exactly a ?trophy? unit. I applied for it for hopefully a high opportunity archery hunt with hopes of a chance at a decent 6 or non typical...plus I love desert deer/elk hunting.

I had a tag in a nearby unit a few years ago so I understand the desert hunts and what it takes as far as scouting/hunt time/effort to be successful. I scouted/hunted hard and came out of that hunt with some truly great elk located, and ended up hanging my tag on a beautiful 340 bull.

Anyways, thanks for your time.

It's reasonable to shoot a 340 bull in 100 if you go find one and don't shoot the first dink 6pt bull you see, like most do..

Shouldn?t have any problem this year killing one with a bow, just take a 5 gallon bucket of water and set by it...

I'll definitely pack a bucket of water and a lazy-boy recliner for the hunt.

Best advice I can give you is to find a secluded water source. In that country there's seeps down in the bottom of some of those canyons that will be green on bottom and no sign of water at the top. I found by watching the wild horses during the heat of the day they will lead you to them and they will be very productive for you.

Brad,

Thanks for the input. I've been pouring over the maps and aerial images so I think I have a few places identified. If you're interested, occasionally reach out to me and I'll keep you up to speed, the same as we did with my last desert elk tag.

It's a big unit, anyone have any general start point suggestions for scouting? Or places that can be eliminated right off the bat?

From E-research I see a few places that are continually mentioned in holding elk, but I'm curious about the general distribution in the unit. Or wether there are actually places to get away from the competition, or off the beaten path? I also have a type 8 cow tag so I'll be down for that as well.

This is some great info guys,,I really really appreciate it. I'm putting together a great list that will surely help me tag the biggest bull in the state this year.

5 gallon bucket of water...✔️
New lay-z-boy recliner...✔️
Lots and lots of arrows...✔️

I knew I could depend on the mighty MM hunters to get me pointed in the right direction;). One tactic I've been seriously considering is sitting in a (comfortable) blind over a water hole (obviously in my lay-z-boy). But one concern I do have is wether you all think it would be okay if I used my Honda generator to power a small ac unit/tv/fridge while sitting in there? I'd hate to get too warm, or uncomfortable, or run out of ice cold beverages.

Thanks again fellas...I'm getting pumped for this hunt!

I tried to retrieve a past post I had recapping a hunt we had there in 2014, but couldn't find it. Maybe the archives don't go back that far or just user error on my part. Shoot me a PM, and I'll share some starting points. Also had cow tag there last year in 2017, and saw the bull ratio booming. Archery is tough but an awesome fun time to be in that country and have it all to yourself.

I hunted antelope in that country last year and saw tons of elk in September. Check out the area south of the Oregon Buttes. Lots of open space, but also lots of contour to work with in that area. Should be a fun hunt! Let us know how you do.

I hear some of the private ranches hold some big bulls, I think there is only 2 non resident tags for that unit

No that is incorrect.

Hi Walt! There were actually 12 Type 1 bull tags and 4 Type 2 tags issued for spikes only in unit 100 this year along with cow tags, but I didn't add up the latter numbers for cows.

Thanks TG ,I will apply for that next year with 11 points

I wouldn't waste my time applying for that unit next year Walt. This year the max of 12 PPs was only 8.57% in the Regular Draw and 15.38% in the Special! It will take max PPs to even have a shot at that unit for quite some time the ways things are going.

I antelope hunted unit 60 last year which is part of 100 for elk, I seen a lot of elk and some nice bulls, you should have a great hunt !

A random tag is possible and perhaps many burned their PP this year and odds will settle again.

Definitely not the biggest bull I saw, not the biggest bull I chased, not even close score wise to the bull I was actually stalking,,,but when closing the final few yards on the big one, I spotted this bull bedded @35 yards, I just couldn't pass up the the velvet or the fact that he eventually stood up perfectly broadside:). It was a fun hunt no doubt.

Thanks to all who offered advice.

Just got back from a weekend scouting trip in 100. I have 2 youth hunters that have Type 1 youth with life-threatening illness commissioners tags coming to hunt starting Oct 2nd (the rifle season opens 5 days early for them). Saw a lot of elk this trip, but they sure are skittish in that open country! If anyone is will to share some tips/information to help us out with these 2 boys, we'd sure welcome it.
