Scouting for Moose Unit 24

I was wondering if it's too early to scout for moose in southwest Wyoming. Will moose change their patterns in the fall compared to the summer? What have others with tags in previous years experienced as far as scouting early for moose?

Once the rut starts the bulls can move a long way, so identifying a specific bull this time of year will not help. Moose are big and black so they don't like to be out in the summer heat much, so scouting early can be discouraging. They will become more active in the fall but summer scouting can be good for learning roads and the lay of the land.

I hunted 26 many years ago but found it was really good to stay mobile and cover lots of ground. If you find cows, a bull may be lurking near by. I saw my bull the day before the hunt opened, but he vanished for a few days. I kept checking the cows that he was with before the hunt and sure enough, he showed back up...just in time for a dirt nap.

If you can, you might check with locals and the game biologist on where to begin looking.

+1 on scouting for the cows. If your a bowhunter than yeah finding a bull early is an advantage. But if your not, those bulls will start wandering, then they'll find a cow, hang out maybe a couple days if necessary or more, than there gone again. And cover country they will. The family and I took a Ranger ride around the south end of the Wyoming Range yesterday. Nice to be out in the warm fresh air. 85*F warm...lol. Started at N. Cottonwood up and over to the Greys and fished for a couple hours then headed upstream. Got to Labarge meadows around 6:30pm and it was still damn hot. Drove down Labarge creek and turned north up over to South Piney and then back north through all the drainages ~25 miles to the truck at about 9:15. Didn't see a moose unfortunately but it didn't start getting cool until about 8:30pm. Seen quite a few deer hitting the creeks from 6 pm on. Dang it was hot. Can be very tough to find moose when its hot. They'll find a damp cool home on a north facing slope where shade is their friend.

If you are going to archery hunt, those bulls will be in the same spot through mid Sept, then they go looking for cows so yes you can pattern one and kill it fairly easily as long as you keep tabs on them. They can go back and forth between drainages or switch drainages all together so you'll need to keep tabs on them at least once a week...good luck.
