Went over to scout a day, and then hunt the opener. Just returned from the unit this morning and thought I'd post some early info for anyone with a tag there this year. I had the WT buck and two extra doe tags to fill. No sign of rut yet in either the MD or WT, think it needs 7-10 more days. There is only about a third of the normal numbers of MD down low, and very little weather up high to push them down. Saw about 300 mule deer, including 30 bucks total. There are close to 40 sheep down in the hay fields to look at. Got about 3-4" of new snow on Togwatee Pass last night. The best buck I saw would only be about 24" 4x4. There is not a lot of pressure yet from locals in the WyGF lower hayfields. Most everyone is up Horse Creek or Union Pass areas. Saw 8 WT bucks on private land, but no shooters, and a couple baby bucks on public.

The extra doe tags are done and filled. Just like shooting sporting clays - a left and a right, and done. Only a hundred yard drag to get both to the truck. Pretty fine eating right there! Now I have to get busy cutting them up. Ran into a fuzzy wuzzy critter while I was coming home this morning, full grown boar of about 400#. They are certainly impressive up close.

I gotta ask a couple things, not trying to be an a$$: why not dress the does out before they start to bloat and what makes you think that is a boar?

Not a problem. These Type-7 tags were only good for private land, and were filled in relatively close proximity to the ranchers dwellings. They asked if I'd dress them out in the sage brush, so of course I said yes. Picture was taken 5 minutes after the shot, and just prior to doing the dirty work..

As for the bear being a boar, we have seen a bunch this year and every female had cubs with her. They are also quite a bit smaller than this guy. This was up in the Turpin Meadows area, which has a lot of females and so far they have all had young in that area.It crossed the road just about 30 feet in front of me, and altho I looked, I didn't see any running gear but made the assumption it was.

Thanks for the post Blank. I'm sitting on max points as a NR and I've looked at this hunt and am interested in what you find. Great pics as well!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-07-18 AT 06:08PM (MST)[p]Went back over for a one day hunt and filled my Type-3 WT buck tag with a prime eater. Nice 6 pt. right at his ear tips and 13" wide. Looking thru the scope he looked to be a perfect 2.5 year old. Dropped the crosshairs to his neck and put him down. No meat loss on this one.

There was more snow and temp was 17 degrees this morning. Numbers of mule deer have just about doubled in the last week. A few more people are hunting, but no real pressure yet. Anyone with this tag have any questions, send me a PM and I will follow on my phone and reply..

This guy looked like a tank, and I would think he is 5-6 years old and going downhill. Big body and only a forked horn. Totally oblivious to any vehicle traffic, and that is what these rutting bucks are known for in the East Fork. I did see several pictures of bucks taken on the early Region E hunt, and they were big this year!

Having to pack the trailer tomorrow to leave for Texas and then Kansas. I will use those two tags for my trophy WT buck efforts, now that all the kids have plenty of meat to get them thru the winter. Will try to update the HAC as we go along.

Awesome, Congrats on a full freezer!

I don't gut many deer now unless we can't get to it with the quad, or has been gut shot. We just hang by the back legs upside down, skin. Remove the anus, urine sack, gutting to the rib cage. Remove the inside tenderloins, front shoulders, rib flank, loins, cut the neck off with sawzall. Then put a barrel under torso and cut below hind quarters, discarding.

Sent you a PM. Am headed up Thursday for my 15 year old's type 3 hunt. Congrats on the deer!

Congrats again on a successful hunt and wonderful trophy. Making memories is what our sport is supposed to be about, and I think you all nailed it!!!

Once again, Texas did not disappoint us. Had a wonderful trip and got some nice WT. My first 11 point too! See my HAC for full story.
