For any of you guys in the Rock springs/Lander area I have a question. I am heading to THermopolis Friday coming from California so will be heading East on 80.
I will be up there around 7 pm I'm guessing and They are calling for snow. Should I be able to get over south pass or should I go to Rawlins and take 287? Best I can tell 287 route looks like it could be up to 1500? lower.
I know south pass can get pretty bad I have taken it many times but never this late in the year.
Any info is appreciated

Haha toss up!! If we get the storm they are calling for I'm betting I80 and 28 gets closed down!!!! I know last storm rock springs filled up with semi?s cause of closed roads and this storm is supposed to be worse, Good luck in your travels and stay safe!!!

Bruce, I was traveling home last weeks storm and I was in 4 x 4 in my Jeep doing 20-25 miles an hour in the pitch black night.

Lots less traffic doing the all nighter but damn it was tense!

Be safe man

Robb I'm sure that's hows it gonna be for us also.
We have not had weather here in California for months and of course now we are getting pounded.
It's going to be an adventure getting over the Sierras and there calling for rain/snow or both over practically every pass from here to thermopolis.its usually about a 17 hour drive no telling how long it's going to take us this time.

I was headed to Cheyenne on November 7 and hit black ice from Laramie to Cheyenne 20 mph until the Truckers started to pass everyone doing 50 mph and they piled up ,I was stuck on the highway for 5 hours .

I-80 in a snowstorm is absolute hell on earth. I'd take south pass just so you can get off the interstate sooner. Plus it is a beautiful ride. I love Wyoming but f?n hate I80 in the winter.

Glad to hear you made it. We were headed back to Ca. Sat. morning from Cody and it was just crazy. Blizzard conditions. When we were getting close to wind river canyon we heard it was closed. It opened up just before we went through. Then when we left Lander we heard South pass was open. Most of the signs said it was open, but one said it was closed. When we got to the gate it was closed. Went back to Lander and headed to Jackson and made it over to Idaho Falls after midnight. Stayed the night but it ended up taking about 26 hours to get home for a typical 17 hour drive. We thought about going through Rawlings but also wanted to stay off I 80. Glad we did. It was an adventure.
