Unit 7 or 16

Most seem to rate those units as great elk spots.
But they take more points than I will likely ever have to spend.

Has anyone on here hunted 7 without a guide or outfitter? I have decided to cash in the points for this unit and I'm not really a "go with a guide" kinda guy. I know there is alot of private but curious if anyone has hunted the public part of the unit.

I did a few years ago. Assuming you are going with the bow? You will have plenty of room to roam in several different areas if you can read detail in a map and can hike a few miles at a clip to fulfill your plan. I couldn't get it done on the bull (saw an all-star and some smaller bulls) but came home with a cow. Hopefully you have more seasonable weather - a mid-sept heat wave was not the best scenario for pre-rut activity.

By the way - I would hunt it again in a second.. with full confidence. If you get a chance to scout you will be WAY ahead of the game.

There are great bulls found in both units. I would definitely carry and use OnXMaps! Elk tend to get pushed onto the larger ranches in these units once pressured...especially during rifle seasons. You may take a look at cow season dates. Sometimes there are early rifle cow hunters hunting during archery season...but most cow hunters hunt close to roads. It can get aggravating watching big bulls that know property fencelines! If you have time and plenty of boot leather you ought to do fine in either unit.

Well looks like we are going to unit 7. Thanks everyone who has helped out thus far. Drawing the tag was the hard part, now scouting begins

Well heck, let's see it!
