Hi All
I'd like to hunt elk in Wyoming. Is it too late to apply?
This will appear as my first post. It is my first post under a new name. I debated whether to be full-disclosure under my original name. Lost that debate. ha
Partial disclosure: 5th generation Utahan, aka "tard" or "utard" to some here. WY NR, aka "unwelcome intruder." I've been called worse. 60th birthday is this year. Happily married for 32 years. First WY hunt was in 1995. That deer hunt is one of my fondest memories. Wyoming became a part of me after that. Current WY NR points: 11 elk, 8 deer, 6 antelope.
Actually, I already know the answer to my question. So, I am not really certain (yet) why I am even posting. Maybe it will become apparent to me after I have rambled a little - or a lot. Perhaps I have just come here looking for a big MM group hug.
I just got done reading a couple other threads here replete with a broad spectrum of interesting opinions, a little name calling, some childish bickering, and plenty of gratitude expressed for opportunities and privileges to enjoy God's great outdoors to some degree. I love our freedoms, including the freedom to say what is on our minds. I like that we can engage in (hopefully civil) dialogue. I like that we are challenged with choice - between self-interest and public virtue. Hopefully we choose wisely and grow through it. Freedom. Its something worth fighting for. Personally, I feel the same as many of you: blessed to enjoy opportunities western states big game hunting. Nothing super fancy for me. Always public, always DIY, usually with family and/or friends, many times solo, oftentimes eating tag soup, every type of conceivable point system, very few regrets. Traditions passed down from pioneer forebears. #FeelingBlessed
So, here I sit today, not really trying to decide which unit I should apply for with 11 WY elk points - or if I should apply. I am more wondering about the trip I have long dreamed of with my son - perhaps a few years from now after he is done with football - and maybe college, combining/splitting points and enjoying a good time together, likely a once-in-a-lifetime father-son deal. 50-50
Maybe I am thinking about that custom long range hunting rifle I might have gotten for him. Putting that on hold - at least for the time being. 50-50
Maybe I am thinking about my 16 year old truck that could be upgraded. I should probably be thinking more about a car that we could replace my wife's 16 year old 250K mile vehicle with. 50-50
Maybe I am thinking about retiring - or getting that dream cabin somewhere in Wyoming, something I always felt was probably just a dream. 50-50
Maybe I am wondering if I should pull the trigger and apply. Maybe I am wondering if I should just walk away from the WY program and know that in some small way I was helping someone else to get through the point creep a year or 2 sooner. 50-50
Maybe I am wondering how is it that we can get so caught up in things that when put into proper perspective are pretty petty and trivial afterall. #DustToDust
Tomorrow is too late, though - to apply. Indeed it is the 11th hour - to apply.
Tomorrow? I think I'll just go ahead and enjoy the day today, January 31st 2019. Today - while we have it! Take my wife and kids out and let them know how much I love them. 100%
50-50? I'll know tomorrow when the Huntsman Cancer Institute calls. I'll be thinking of YELUM, Brian's wife and others around here who have faced their trials and challenges against great odds with exemplary courage. 50-50 is the prognosis my research says. At this point, I'll accept those odds with grace.
For now, I am just going to put the apps on hold and mark January 31st 2020 on my calendar. If it works out, it works out. If not, oh well. A lot more important events are sure to transpire between now and then.
