General Elk Tags

I am wondering if anyone might help with a suggestion on a decent area to hunt for a general elk tag. My Pops, brother, and I drew a party hunt for the General Elk hunt and was looking for some general areas to start at. We drew this tag in 2007 and went up to Ruby River & Big Hole country around Dillon however the Elk were already moved out and only seen three cows the whole trip. If anyone has any input they don't mind sharing it would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the Gravelly and Madison ranges. They get hunted pretty hard, but there are areas to get away from people if you're willing to hoof it. I'll be out for the rifle season as well.

I just heard that Sun River game range will allow hunting this season,if you wait until December the hunting should be decent.

You were in a good area. Tons of bulls are killed in the ruby and areas around Dillon. Not usually mature bulls, but bulls nonetheless.

I dont think the elk were already gone when you were there; the resident animals are there, but the animals that come from the east havent made it there yet. It took me a while to figure that area out, but I kept hitting it year after year until I did. Sure you could try a new area, but then you will have to familiarize yourself with a new place all over again.

Got this one in there also in 2007. Like Randy said, not really any monsters, but there are bulls there.

HalfAce gives good advice. In my younger years as I ran all over the country chasing elk "sightings", my Dad always told me...."Hunt the same place EVERY time until you know it better than the elk do." I punch my elk tag every year. mtmuley
