Hello I am from new mexico and wanted to ask which are the best elk units to apply for for for the special drawing any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I already know the best units in the state. However I wanna know what Nonya means by unit W. Sounds like the beginning of a knock-knock joke to me.

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

nonya, How the Hell do you know the guy wants a scouting report? Besides giving specific unit numbers, which I prefer not to do on a forum, a point in the right direction won't hurt. wapiti0223, check your pms. mtmuley

LAST EDITED ON May-16-11 AT 08:20AM (MST)[p]He wants to know what areas the locals have decided are the best, its called internet scouting, get it?Probably not.If you cant pick up a set of regs and do the math you probably dont have a clue. Why would anyone drop their favorite area numbers on an internet forum?

LAST EDITED ON May-16-11 AT 09:09PM (MST)[p]I guess you should quit being one then.If you are going to stick up for the cyber scouter why dont you post some great general elk areas for us?

"Cyber Scouter". Damn near everyone on MM has cyber scouted. I'm not sticking up for anyone. I used to have the same $hitty attitude that you do. I happened to have met a NR here at MM with a premier muley buck permit in an area I could help him with. He came to Montana and we met up for some scouting and BSing. This guy and his friends are HUNTERS. They know what the Hell they are doing, they hunt hard and they don't need babysat. I'd hunt with them anywhere, anytime for anything. More so than with some of the dickweeds that call our fine state home. After that experience I learned not to pass judgement on "cyber scouters". General elk areas? Seems like you oughta know, and I don't "post up" unit numbers. mtmuley

Wapiti0223,
I'm from NM also (we might be neighbors - I live in Rio Rancho). I've hunted all over Montana in different spots. I think I've had a couple "Special" drawing tags over the years, but never anything really "SPECIAL". I think I had an either sex tag in an area that was bull only (with the general tag) one year and I had an archery tag in the HD 700s (but that didn't even require a special tag until a couple years ago). I've put in but never drawn the hard to draw tags. For me, I'd rather have a decent General Hunt every other year (about my draw odds) than a single once in a lifetime hard to draw tag in an area I've never hunted in. So I put in for the hard to draw tags but never draw them and I'm not too disappointed because I'm saving my lucky draw for a NM Desert Bighorn (someday). If you want to give me a call, we can compare notes. I'll PM my phone number to you.
Bob

Guess Im just the guy that thinks its redicoulus to post in another states forums asking guys where to put in for tags...#1 nobody who knows wtf they are talking about is going to tell you anything of value #2 anyone who does offer information is probably sending you to the oppsite side of the state they hunt and #3 you can get this information by looking through the drawing stats in the front of the MT regs.

And if you look at the number of apps vs. the number of rifle tags it becomes obvious.

Do ya find em in one of the best elk units that nobody knows about if they don't look at the draw odds in the regs book cause they are too lazy so they just ask about the best units for elk on the internet on the Monster Muleys Montana forum? mtmuley

I bet he buys...... I mean finds them at a Montana horn dealer, or maybe the Jackson Hole horn auction. Anyone wants any info on elk in Montana Ill spill my guts, just ask!

LAST EDITED ON May-24-11 AT 07:58PM (MST)[p]Lets here about all your great spots then,Im asking...I find em by hitting the hills and scouting before they drop, putting in miles upon miles on foot and finding places where the pressure is light, traveling and finding new spots every year so I dont have to compete on the stupid ass WMA openers, helping ranchers with fencing and roundups to gain access, thats why its called hunting.

LAST EDITED ON May-24-11 AT 08:46PM (MST)[p]My offer was more directed towards the OP, but I guess if you want some tips/advice go ahead and ask away!

I just did,and Im sure the OP will appreciate your sharing all these hot spots on the net so there will be plenty of company there when opening weekend rolls around.

Why is posting elk hunting areas on here so private? Pick up Huntin fool or Eastman's and you can read all about it. I don't think a few people helping out each other is going to ruin your private hunting spots. Mtmuley PM me and I'll tell you a couple.

If its not going to hurt your spot why do you have to share them in a PM?The truth is NOBODY is going to post directions to their honey holes on a net forum(and if you are telling me you will Im calling you a F,n liar OR ur just a s%$# talker that doesnt really know jack about good elk spots),but they have no problem sending someone to another guys spot,if you cant do the work like everyone else and find your own spots just hire a guide.Dont expect to ask a question like that on a forum and get info good enough to base a hunt on,the "best" zones are the hard to draw tags, the BEST hunting is the kind you can do on a general tag on public land with a good chance of killing a good bull, those spots are few and far between ad can be quickly ruined by an idiot who wants to put pressure on someone else s spots to reduce pressure on their own, that kind of crap happens locally here in MT all the time. The best areas in the state for huge bulls are the Elkhorns,The Breaks,The Snoweys and probably the Highwoods.Either the tags are REAL hard to draw or the access is non existent. There is GOOD elk hunting all over the state on general elk tags,if your going to hunt do yourself a favor and come up to scout pre Sept.

If I didnt know better Id say mtmuley might have a few good spots that might have a few raghorn bulls the wolves havent gotten yet, and maybe Zigga too. There are still a few people that dont mind helping someone out with a little info to help them get started with planning a hunt.

I'm sorry I missed the point of this whole thread. The guy from NM was asking for some general hunting areas and not honey holes and that is what people were trying to give him. I do my home work too and I don't think one area listed on here is a top area. They have the quality but they are extremely hard to draw. I consider a great area as one that has quality and good draw odds and they do exist.

When I draw my special permit ( wishfull thinking ) this year I'm going to hit you up for some info ismith.

NONYA, tkhunt is right. The OP didn't ask for any honeyholes. His odds of drawing one of Montana's "best" areas are poor. The good areas are no secret to anyone anyway, resident or not. If he draws an area and I know something about it, I'd help. As far as info on the over the counter general areas I hunt, I don't give that up except for a select few. mtmuley

That wasnt for the OP it was for the guy saying he would share his spots with anyone who asked.Draw a 380 tag and Ill let you camp next to the garage and you can hunt from the house,my place buts up against a BM that buts up against FS right in the middle of the Elkhorns, its the best tag in the state with the best odds of killing a true monster bull, almost the entire portion of the area that holds elk is either public or Bm ground, the tag cant be beat, odds of drawing are low but its the same with any of the "best" tags here in MT.B-elieve it or not with the percentage of tags set aside for NR in these areas there is a chance your odds of drawing as a NR are higher than a Res in a few of the "best" areas that dont get the publicity that 380 or 600 areas get such as the late rifle tag for the migrating bulls on the Blackleaf WMA.

I'm in for 380 this year simply because in the snowballs chance I draw, it is closer to home than my favorite area. Work is iffy and gas might be $4.00 puls a gallon so I am planning to stay close in all my hunting. I'll let ya know about that camping spot. lol mtmuley

I almost applied for that particular unit again this year! Its a great spot if you have time and the weather holds. Gas is just too dang expensive this year along with a lack of time off. Going to have to stick around the local area this year. Let me know if you draw for sure, Ill mark up a map for ya. Pretty country too!

LAST EDITED ON May-27-11 AT 11:34PM (MST)[p]I really hope someone I know draws the 380 tag,I live in it,can see elk from the backporch and have had them in my yard during the rut,but Ive never been in on a big 380 bull kill.We put in for the 622 rifle tag as a party, odds are slim even with 6 points but it would be a fun hunt.I can kill bulls right around here and theres always a chance of getting a shot at a great bull without drawing a tag(330+),any bull I put a tag on makes me happy,Id love to kill a monster some day but all elk are trophy's in my book.

We have hunted 622 with the archery only tags, but Ive never been on that zone during the rifle hunt.Last year the BIG 380 bulls were shot on the south end, there were 1200 elk hanging down on the open hills south of Townsend after the wolves pushed them down, some great bulls were taken.

I have 7 points points going into this year. Still need the luck factor but someone has to draw.

Nice to see you guys made up.

I think the rules of thumb is if it's a top end unit, you only get to hunt it with a tag in your hand a couple of times in a lifetime. So why not help someone? And is telling someone which unit really going to hurt your draw odds? No.

Now a general area that you hunt often, you shouldn't give that up for a couple of reasons. 1) you don't want everyone and his brother on "your" mountain come opening day. 2) It probably won't be that good for someone else anyways. You've learned it and the animal's habits. You are successful regardless of the weather, pressure, etc because you've invested enough time to be successful even when conditions are tough.

Just my .02 cents.

Pretty much sums it up.The "best" areas are obvious, low number of tags and a shitload of applicants. The best area is one you can hunt on a general tag and you know how to hunt it successfully,if your going to run your mouth about it on the net you just ruined it for everyone that hunts it.You CAN kill a monster bull anywhere in MT,it doesnt need to be a draw area to be great.IMO

Most guys around where I live are pretty tight lipped. I always shake my head at the guys that somehow kill a nice bull, drive all over Hell displaying it in the back of their truck, and load up anyone that wants to hunt the area. While I have yet to kill a monster in my favorite spot, I never eat a tag. mtmuley

That is exactly how the area opposite 380 near Boulder got ruined, idiots from the area would kill a nice bull, load it up and drive into Helena telling everyone that would listen where they killed it,now it looks like a friggen warzone through the archery and rifle seasons and you are lucky to kill anything. On top of that I have heard assholes from Helena telling other hunters how great the spot is even though they have never hunted it,its an easy way to send pressure far away from the local areas that they hunt,IMO you should keep your mouth shut about areas on the net, even if you dont hunt that spot someone else probably does and wouldnt appreciate you sending half the NR hunters on the net to their spots, you dont know who you are dealing with and how many hunters are going to show up there because of your "help".

Draw that 380 tag so you can kill the double left beam bull I jumped yesterday.
