Freezeout

Anyone ever hunt Freezeout. Looking to plan a trip this year and need a ballpark date as to when the snows and swans are usually in?

Hunted it alot...really depends on the weather, but I'd plan around the 5-10th of November.

There is a hot-line you can call that tells how many birds are in...it changes quick, I used to call every day.

Typically the swans arrive ahead of the snow geese.

I'd plan on being flexible and be willing to go once the birds are in. Also, dont get hung up right at freezeout...look around anywhere between Augusta and Valier for large flocks of snows.

Opportunity abounds, I've shot limits of snows, pheasants, ducks, sharpies, and huns all in the same day there. Used to be able to buy OTC whitetail doe tags as well. Its a neat place.

A few pics from there:

Nice old pics there!FO isnt what it once was, pressure has alot to do with it.Upland bird has taken the biggest hit, waterfowl is still good on perfect days.It has been freezing early and moving lots of the white birds out before they get real thick, swan hunting is always decent if you can draw a tag.

Really like the hooded merganser...I always saw them but never did bag one. The variety of ducks found there is really tough to top in Montana.

I've heard the upland hunting is tougher, but I still think there are birds there if you hunt away from freezeout. I never did that well with the crowds right at the lakes, I did better in the surrounding area for nearly everything.

I should try to make it up there this fall when I'm in MT hunting deer and elk.
