I drew an either sex elk tag for these units. Anyone have any tips or tricks to share about this unit. I already know it is mostly private and the elk maybe few and far between but it is somewhat close to home and i had to give it a try.

My father-in-law killed a nice elk in this area with a outfitter he really liked. If you are interested I will get his info.

I am bow hunting with a friend on his property this year. There are some big elk in this area.

Or if anyone knows of any ranches that allow hunting with an access fee i might be interested in looking into that. Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Jul-21-11 AT 02:34PM (MST)[p]Your looking at about 1200 for a few days, might as well hire an "outfitter" aka rancher to take you in.

Yeah I agree Outfitter/rancher same thing haha. Just an option i want to keep open. Sounds like the elk aren't very numerous but there are some good ones if you can get on private. Hope to find one on public but am open to other options also.

My buddy and his wife drew 2 years ago,he killed a broke up,small 6 on public and the next day they spotted a monster bull on private, they ended up "leasing" the ranch for a week($2500.she didnt kill the bull they saw(aprox 400") but she did take a 388" bull.Pretty sure if you dont know someone your going to pay high to hunt some GOOD(private) ground out there.

Pretty sure you DON'T have to pay to have a great hunt. There's good private, but there's also some gaggers on the public - they come and go as they please. I saw a heck of a bull on public last season.

If theres a BIG bull on public there will be an outfitter camped on it,they fly and get the bulls spotted long before most the hunters show up.It can happen but if you want to improve your odds of taking home a hog with a tag you will probably never draw again reserve an "outfitter" right now.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-11 AT 02:46PM (MST)[p]That is complete BS and pretty hilarious.

My guess is you can't find your ass in the dark.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-11 AT 06:20PM (MST)[p]Yep,complete BS,wait till the first day of the season and shoot your 400" bull from the road, maybe you can scout one out for him with your superior knowledge of the area and its elk?I know of two guys that fly for outfitters out there spotting elk and sheep for them(they fly for the F&G when they do counts and predator control) if there are any trophy bulls out there they will be located before the season opens, you can bet on it.But of course thats complete BS too, dont bother getting access to some premium ground where you wont be competing with EVERYONE else. Its also complete BS that some "outfitters" have been caught hazing elk into private before the season begins, complete BS.

BTW if you want to go up a couple days early and spend a little $ I can give you the name of a guy who will take you up for around $125 and hour to fly your area(weather permitting),he lets you sit in the front seat of an old Piper, its a fun ride and he knows where the elk hang up there.Pm me if your interested and Ill get his permission before I hand out his #.You CAN kill a good bull on public but Id give myself every advantage and maybe take home a monster bull. There is an old Eastmans episode where they hunted up there on public land for 10 days during the archery hunt, they held out for anything with 6 points and went home empty handed.

10,000,000 acres, 175 either sex permits, and all the big bulls are herded up onto private and tied to trees by outfitters. Oh.. and the Eastmans couldn't get'r done. I know what's better than winning a gold medal in the special olympics.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-11 AT 06:02PM (MST)[p]Im sure you have the gold medal to prove it...175 permits, how many BIG bulls do you suppose are in that area on public ground with nobody hunting them come opening morning?

Let us know exactly. I'm sure you're buddies with airplanes know where all of them are. Your hunting tips always make me laugh NONEYET.

They do,they get paid to know. The f&g pays them to fly Bios for game counts and outfitter/hunters pay them to find trophy animals.Do you have any thing to offer besides insults and ignorance?

LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-11 AT 08:51PM (MST)[p]Yep you "saw" a good bull on public once so you have the place nailed down, you should really become an outfitter, with your superior attitude and complete lack of common sense you would fit right in.If the guy wants to take a big bull he should consider the options, you can greatly increase your odds up there by spending a little money,if thats out of the question then he should be trying to reserve some of the BM right now, most of them take reservations and limit hunters per week.Dont forget about the 795 archery hunters you have to contend with its not a slam dunk by any means.

BTW theres a horse ranch south of Asland on Otter creek, they have a big chunk of private right in the middle of the CNF,a knock on the door will probably get you in,you can cross their place and get back into some premo stuff thats land locked on that side.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-11 AT 09:06PM (MST)[p]NoneYet..

You think you see everything from the air? How long would it take to inventory that herd, knowing they're scattered across 10,000,000 acres and travel like mad? How much have you personally hunted in that area? I've been over there more than once, and I'll be one of the few guys with a 2011 hogger of a bull, though that would be nothing new. :)

Locking down some private land might help a guy out, but you made it sound like success is impossible without that, which is total BS. I've seen plenty of good animals over there, and taken my share. I first started hunting that area in 1995.

There are only 2 maybe 3 outfitters permited on the Ashland part of the Custer. None of them are permited for elk. If you know of a outfitter hunting elk on the Custer by Ashland I would like to know about them.

You didnt see another vehicle with hunters in it the whole trip? You didnt see any hunters afield?Did you talk to every group you saw and ask them if they were being guided? There are plenty of them on the private surrounding it.

These guys claim they are...

"We are also the only permitted outfitter on approximately 60,000 acres of the Custer National Forest. Hunting here is for whitetail, mule deer, antelope as well as archery elk."
Now you know.

Is that a reply to my post?

CA - I have been sent a ton of GPS units to use in the show. I don't get paid by any of those companies.

I have sent every unit back to the manufactur, with one exception. I will not relinquish my Garmin GPSMAP 62st. Acquires satellites quickly, great mapping features, easy on batteries when you don't have the back light running all the time, easy to use, and durable as can be.

I know they cost some dough, but I have used one for two years and this will be the third season. It is excellent. Before that, I had a 60CSX and it worked very well, also. The 62 is much like the 60, but even better.

Good luck.

Does anyone know of any one local that would pack an elk out? Or isit impossible to get to far from the nearest trail?

Shouldn't need to have somebody pack an elk out of that unit. You are hard presesd to get too far from a road and the country is gravy. Quarter it out and backpack, shouldn't be too bad anywhere. I plan to load a whole B&C bull in my truck. :D

LAST EDITED ON Sep-23-11 AT 11:43PM (MST)[p]Anyone been in these units during archery this year? I was over on a scouting/bowhunting trip just for a day this week. It was extremely hot and i did not see hide nor hair of an elk. I sure do hear some good things about this area from everyone we talked to. I guess i should add we were in the CNF north of 212 and also down otter creek up ten mile country. Am i getting warm?

Did u tag out Spaz?? Looks like im having tagsoup. Had a few chances just no big ones. Hope i can talk the wife into riding along this weekend and giving it one last go but not sure how thats gonna work out with a 2.5 year old and 7 month old that would also have to tag along. Let me know how you did.

NONEYET ... changed his handle. Awesome.

Ground shots of my National forest deer and elk. Outfitters and your buddies with planes missed these ones. My little sister shot a bigger deer on the opener over there, but it was taken on private property. She also shot a near B&C pronghorn and a cow elk.

That Bull MIGHT brake 300(probably wont with no backend),I know taking the pic with the camera 6" from the antlers makes em look bigger but that bull isnt anything close to being the kind of bull the thread was talking about.I dont see a "gagger" or a "booner" posted from any hunts in this area from this year....

NoneYet, I should have listened to you. I failed. To add insult to injury, of all the raghorns I've had in my boiling pot, this is the first that wouldn't fit. You can't imagine how sad that made me. Those burrs are 14". Not bad for a dink.. cape bought me a case of old mil. Bummed that he only had one teeny ivory.

How'd your season go? Any tips on wolf hunting? I could use some of your expertise. Guess who's going to shoot one.. Me? :)

LAST EDITED ON Dec-06-11 AT 10:17PM (MST)[p]NoneYet, and I forgot to mention.. I had just an amazing time this fall over there with the exception of my gas bill. My very first post was to explain the FACT that you can have a great hunt on public ground over there, a 178 muley (gross) and a bull that scores 344 all busted up is pretty good proof. He would have been a B&C awards contender unbroken and I'm very happy to have run into him. It was my last weekend hunting and he is a great trophy bull elk. He is the biggest I saw. I passed a rifle shot at a 340-350 range 6X7 on the first weekend, and a 330ish 6X6 during archery- with my children along, who both called elk, and had great bugleing action ( them calling). They are 7 and 10.

I saw a black bear in the forest and only ran into TWO hunters total the entire season hunting public most of the time... they were a man and his nephew on horseback. While I was on foot, I glassed up ZERO others.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-11 AT 11:25AM (MST)[p]Do yo have a pic that shows more than the lower half( I know you took some field pics with the whole rack in the pic...)?If you are passin up 6x7 bulls I know where we are puttin in for next year!

NoneYet, I pass up 6point bulls every year. I saw fewer this year than most others. I highly encourage you to apply next year. I
I'm sure you'd knock it out of the park.

Hey Gre****n, I mean Spaz :), How many times did you drive back and forth in 2011 from your house to this unit specifically for your elk/deer hunt? This includes scouting, archery hunting, and rifle hunting. How many days would you say you spent in the NF hunting for deer/elk in your elk unit? Both of these animals were public land NF animals, right?

I don't mean to drill you, but it seems like you really put your time in, that's all. I am out and about a lot for work, but, but I don't have many days that I can spend "really" hunting. By this I mean being where I want to be before light and being able to hunt all day with my binos and spotting scope. I have lots of mornings where I can easily get to a vantage point and glass, but I usually have somewhere to be by 10 am somewhere in between Rudyard and Alzada if you know what I mean.

I think I have the smarts and the mental toughness to be able to consistantly put large animals on the ground....it's just the time that I don't have. I have had my share of success in 5 years that I have really tried to hunt for real....I just want to hear from you how much time you honestly put in for this type of hunt.

Congrats ont the elk and deer(goat and bear too)........

Hey Fin, if you are out there>>>> If I draw a Book Cliffs archery deer or Manti LE Elk Any Weapon tag in the next few years in my home state of UT...you wanna make an episode? Only stipulation is Lawnboy and his UT bashing can't come :)

"That's a special feeling, Lloyd"

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-11 AT 10:43PM (MST)[p]How exactly do you pass up bulls in archery season when you drew a rifle tag? Were you hunting a different unit during archery?Do you draw every year or do you pass up 6x6 bulls in general areas every year?If he had a topend to match the front he would be B&C,no doubt about it.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-07-11 AT 11:29PM (MST)[p]stubaby, I was over there a lot but not enough. It's a mutherfrucker of a unit to hunt. Awesome area with great bulls on public, but if a guy just wants a decent bull, there's easier places. Gravy terrain, but not many elk and they move a ton. I didn't hunt deer a single day, just shot that one, while looking for elk. Shot a couple coyotes too..

NoneYet, read the regs. I pass 6X6 bulls every year on general units on national forest, mostly during archery, and did on this unit this year, archery and rifle. Years ago when I first archery hunted elk over there, you didn't need a permit.

You mind sharing a few of those general unit locations so I can shoot one of those 6x6 bulls you pass up on a regular basis?

My son just turned 11 and will be hunting next fall. You'd be better off following him around.

Ive already got all the data I collected from the GPS unit I put in your truck this year,I think Ill be fine.
