We were in elk and deer all day,the bulls didnt make a sound where we were(might have something to do with the FN OUTFITTER who was buzzing the elk at 6:30 am with his piper cub),no shooter bucks(1st day) seen.Spotted 2-300(yes HUNDRED ) elk coming down off the front at dark to feed, leaving at 2 am to try to be above them when the sun appears in the AM,plenty of bulls in the herd but they seemed more concerned with grass than poon.Great first day,got pics of a couple b bears as well.Seems the elk rut is getting off to a slow start where Im at,might hit a peak during my vacation this year(fingers crossed for the next 2 weeks).

Found out why the elk arnt making any noise...wolves AND a grizz in the area, the big herd is posted up on a big bald slope with lookouts in every direction, bulls are off by themselves, talked to several groups of hunters in the area today and nobody has herd a bugle, wolves must have been harassing them for a while.Saw the sow and cub again today, they picked up a big boar that seems to be in love, hes VERY lucky rifle season isnt here yet!Had a couple great first days, looked over some decent deer, saw several hundred elk and 3 bears, going out for a quick morning hunt and then back to work.

Moved south and had a small bull come in and pose at 65 yards,8 cows came through and passed right next to us,fun morning. Two small bugles from this little bull, finally some excitement but he was just making noise, still not paying attention to the cows.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-06-11 AT 01:40AM (MST)[p]Just curious APPROXIMATELY where on the front you saw the bears. I know you dont share much info but I would love to kill a predator this year and so far have not found a bear while scouting. Bears and wolves are the same to me...we should not keep secret where they are so everyone can kill one. I know you would never give up the spot for fear of someone hunting your elk.....I really dont care about elk hunting overall, in fact I would rather just shoot ducks over elk.

pm me..I am going scouting to the sun river this weekend and am hoping to finaly find a blackie and maybe a wolf.

NW of Choteau, private land.We went through SR on the way home Sun and talked to the guys camped there, they had seen a Sow grizz with two cubs and a few coyotes, thats it.If your after a bear spend a couple days hiking the Ear Mountain WMA,you will see bears.

Hunted Elkhorn unit with my son, who drew the tag. Saturday and Sunday we didn't hear a peep, except for one bull bugling at 1030 pm by camp. We hiked fairly hard to get away from the ATV traffic but still didn't get any action. Saw several cows and spikes but no bulls. On Monday morning on the way to another spot a giant bull ran in front of the ATV at 530am. We parked and waited and by 8am had worked 3 bulls and heard 4 or 5 more. We had found the bulls! Anyway, it seemed a bit too early as they weren't in full rut but I think next weekend could be good.

yes the bull's havent hit full swing yet. Flesher pass is loaded with wolves now, every wolf hunter should go there. We called in two of them with our elk cow call's and heard them at night like crazy. I kinda like them in our spot, no elk will bugle at night, they will only call in the morning's. Good luck everybody. Man having an elk horn tag would be a dream for me, but first how do i apply for a special unit? Can i do it right now, put in for next year?

Federal trapper is trying to kill some wolves right behind my house in 380 right now, killed a couple of Baums cattle last week.Dont be shy with those 380 bulls,if you can find their bedding area you might be surprised how close you can get if you stay down wind, they are surprisingly stupid some times.I have feeling there will be plenty of big dead heads for me to find next spring now that there are TWO packs cruising 380.
