Fly out tomorrow evening to unit 320 for deer elk combo. Just curious if the bulls are talkin yet. I know in AZ its typically just a tad early for full rut but not sure how early they start in MT. I know in WY I've had good rut action this time of year. Heard its been pretty hot around Sheridan - 80 +.

I have been hunting 380. They are definitely started but with the heat and full mooon almost all of the activity that I have heard has been after dark. There is a cool front coming in right now and I expect that this weekend will be pretty good.

I saw the chance for t-storms and temp drop on Fri and Mon. Figure those days and the following morns will be good hopefully. Thanks for the response. Should be out Fri evening for 5 straight days. Wish I had more days but allegiant air only flys certain days.

FINALLY...Went out an hour early this AM and listened to them from 1 hr before first light till just after, watched a bull rubbin a dead tree that never made a sound, just gettin started IMO.

Where we were hunting the bulls were just starting to bugle, but still not responding to calls. Although we did have one good bull that was fired up and my dad killed it. I think next week should be good.

In 700 bugling and fighting like crazy. started on 10th and been going strong since then. heard them earlier just got really cranking on 10th.

They are screaming their heads off. My children have been squealing at them. Gosh, I hope I can find one the outfitters don't have all tied up.

Nice pic SPAZ. It's obvious you are hunting just outside YNP on the north end. I know exactly where. Noneyet knows that and every area well. If you didn't see him there then it's not worth a damm. If you have any questions about hunting in general then please address them to Noneyet.

Yesterday morning we killed a small bull(4x4) in a wallow at dawn,(my buddies brother from wisc.,his first elk)you have never seen anyone so excited about a kill! right at sundown had a 3x3 come in and stand at 30 yards tearing the hell out of a cedar and exchanging bugles, his big brother a decent 6x6 bugled one time and then pushed the cows out of the sage and up into the timber. They arnt "fired up" here yet but definitely getting started.Headed north in the AM to check on a bull that has eluded me for two years.
Zigga you still trying to find an internet "friend" or are you out doing some hunting?

No hunting yet. Family stuff will have to be my excuse. Work schedule sucks. Cash strapped. Still no internet friends. Good to hear you are getting some action. It's already later than I like to bowhunt. Already looking to the opener of rifle. I have a decent spot picked out but hopefully will be done before then.

Good luck.

It seems like the heavy rut falls a bit later here locally every year,I remember when the 15th was the peak almost every year in the same place, global warming I guess!JK Ill pack the bow every day I get till Oct 1 and then the big waterfowl opener weekend will make me forget all about the elk(for a few weeks anyways).I here the cash stapped crap, hunting out of my 91 honda accord is a bit embarrassing but I cant afford to drive the bigrig every day so....

They were singin this AM,didnt even get started till about 1/2 hr after legal light,I was trying to sneak in between two bulls when a herd bull pushed 10 head of cows past me at top speed putting the horn to em to keep em moving(prob a 310-320) bull.My buddy "Chuckles" is still in there did his usual thing, chuckled all the way up to his bedding spot in the cliffs and never paid any attention to cows, cow calls, ect. They stopped about 11 and I snuck out to the truck to try again tomorrow.Almost had a Fred Echlir moment,a barley legal runt came in at full speed and slid to a stop at 30 yards,it was real hard not to loose an arrow in the excitement,in my mind i was thinking..."brow tine...CHECK...Yardage?....30...deep breath......WAIT!Dont do it!"!I think Im long past the point bow hunting elk to kill em,just being able to have close encounters is just as much fun and if I dont I get to hunt another day!My buddy is on the north side of Canyon Ferry this week and has had about the same reports, said they bugled hard today but hes still seeing cows with no bulls attached.Good luck guys.

NONYA, Make DAMN sure you get good pictures if you haul a bull out of the woods on the Honda! Looks like my hunting season may get interupted by a trip to New Mexico for work. Hope not, but we'll see. Good luck guys. mtmuley

Well my trip was unsuccessful. I covered a lot of ground from 6300-9000 feet with minimal results. Was on a bull my first morning and that was pretty much it. Only heard a handful bugles. Had a very nice Shiras bull moose at 30 yards, got video of him on my phone.
