Question on Elkhorn Elk Habits

I have been archery hunting the Elkhorns, spending time in the Tizer area. I have heard that once the rifle season starts, the bulls disappear. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this and potential areas where they migrate. I suspect that private land is the destination but not sure where. Any help is appreciated. This is for my son, but I am enjoying the hunt more than he is so it is for me too. Since this is such a limited hunt, hopefully someone is willing to share some info. Thanks in advance.

Private, lower foothills, stuff where the feed is a plenty.Saw a BIG(360-370)) bull in the back of a Toyota pickup coming out of Indian Cr Rd Tues about noon in two pieces looked like the shooter was a woman, she had a smile you couldnt wipe off with a rock!

I've heard private land around Winston is really good. Never drawn the tag and never hunted there but good luck. Knock on some doors.

Well, we hunted all season, including archery and rifle. Had a couple of opportunities with archery but rifle was TOUGH! I have never spent this much time hunting and I started to believe that the tag was a curse. Finally, we had basically given up on the last day and decided to head home. The weather was 50 degrees and it was late afternoon. As we headed out I glassed one last drainage and found a lone bull bedded next to a tree. We moved in but the bull had stood up and joined six others that were with him, which we hadn't seen. They saw us first and headed over the hill. We thought it was over.

We followed up the hill into the next drainage and somehow they were all bunched up at the bottom. We got within 425 yards and my son made the shot(s). Bull down! The sun was going down on the final day of season but we got it done.

Congrats on the bull. I too got a coveted tag a few years back for unti 621(North side of FT Peck-CMR)and had one heck of a time finding a good bull there. Ended up going back on a last minute hunt and found a 320" bull 1/2 mile off the road. Was hoping for a once-in-a-lifetime bull with that tag, but as you now know it isn't that easy.
