Hello everyone i just started to read the post on the forum and there is alot of good information. I just start to apply for sheep in Montana and i want to start applying for moose and mt goat also. I would like to know what are some good units for a bowhunter to apply for with these 3 animals. I'm not looking to set any records just want an opportunity at respectable animals. Thanks for the help

I am 31, have 5 points for all these species and have come to grips with the likelihood of never drawing sheep or moose in MT. Mt goat maybe. So few tags so many applicants. MT has a point system but no tags are given to top point holders. Every point is just another name in the hat.

Take a look at the draw odds per unit and species in the regulations. Obviously the units with the astronomical amount of applicants would give you the best chance at killing your quarry with a bow. There are a ton of people putting in for these units because they have the most/best animals compared to other units. Good luck as the odds are WAY worse for non-residents.

Almost any sheep area you can draw in Montana is a good hunt...with either archery or rifle. The good thing is the seasons are incredibly long from September-November. Pretty much the same for moose and goat.

The odds are never going to be good in any sheep, goat, or moose area in Montana...but you'll never draw if you dont apply.

Between my Dad, Brother and I we've drawn 1 ram permit, 4 moose permits, 2 goat tags, and 2 ewe permits (second choice) since 1988 in Montana.

As an example,my uncle applied 19yrs in a row before drawing a goat tag and 36 before drawing a sheep tag,he gave up on moose after 20 yrs.I havnt drawn any of them, been applying since 1992.

I was talking with a guy at work that has 42 years of unsuccessful applications. Maybe it's time Montana adopts a real preference point system. I'm maxed on BP's for moose and sheep, but it doesn't make me think I'm any closer to a tag. mtmuley

The problem with that is, you get a point creep and any hunters that get in the draw late will never get a tag.

Unfortunately, there is no good way to go about it so that everyone who wants to kill one will eventually be guaranteed a chance.
