Drew this permit this year and it will be my first Montana hunt. I already have the area i'm going to hunt figured out. Just was looking for any advice or input on what i might be up against. I plan on hunting the last 10 days of September. You fellas have any advice?

I hunted it last year, first week of October. It was very hot and windy which made for challenging hunting. I have hunted elk all over the west and this was my least favorite hunt I have been on. Lots of average 260 to 300 bulls with an occasional bigger one. Elk numbers are high and hunter numbers are even higher. Everyday felt like a race to get to places before others. I found myself leaving camp two hours earlier than I would have liked to just to be the first to get to an area. Even when I arrived early multiple vehicles would pull up next to my vehicle and hunt the same area.

On the positive side, the bulls were vocal, they were visible, and there seemed to be a few at every location I visited. The coulees make it difficult to pinpoint the locations of the bulls. I always thought they were further away than they actually were. It would be an awesome hunt if they limited the number of hunters. Until then it wont be a hunt that I go after again.
