Where to Live?

Hey guys, was hoping to get some input on places to live. Since I was a kid, I've been dreaming of moving up your way. It's kind of a family joke, since I've been talking about it for so many years, but the time has finally come. Right now I'm looking hard at Missoula, it's always been a favorite place of mine, and I really love the surrounding country. Heard good things about Livinston and Kalispell as well.

I know I will be hunting the entire state, and though it's huge, that isn't a prime reason for location. Just want to retire (yep, am almost there) and use my VA housing to get a place to die in when the time comes ;-)

Been a blue collar worker most of my life since I don't take well to a desk and office, so I imagine I could get work until my retirement kicks in in 5 years. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Have you considered around Bozeman. I don't think I would want to live in Bozeman, but there is a small town about 15 minutes away called Manhattan, it is a very nice town. Good luck with your decision, I would also like to move there one day.

I used to really like Missoula. Now, it's affectionately known as San Francisco North. We're a lot more in touch with Montana up the Bitteroot. mtmuley

Missoula's great if the weirdos don't bother you. If they do then there's lots of great areas that are more Montana and a short commute to Missoula.

Lots of great hunting and fishing in that part of the state though.

Thanks for the input guys. Guess there are weirdo's everywhere, but they don't bug me much. I think I'll just carve out a little slice of heaven somewhere along the Bitterroots not too far from Missoula. I can't wait for the move to happen, and make some new memories in a new land.

all i can say is please dont build a huge house in the mountains, there a zillions of leftover trophy homes from all the people coming from the cities to "carve out" their montana dream. its getting phugly here.

I hear you RockyDog. Many of the places I hunted critters as a kid are filled with 'trophy homes' and it breaks a feller's heart to see it. When I lived in Cali, I built on a small piece of property that had blm as my back yard; a modest little house that served me and the family well without taking away what most of us love. Never really been 'city folk' myself, even when I had to live in one.

In Montana, I don't plan to build anything, but rather buy a small existing place I can "carve out" my dwindling years in peace; so no worries there. Perhaps I shouldn't use loosely worded metaphors, a bit less friction wouldn't hurt. ;-)

They are now leaving faster than they are moving here, the trend is looking up.

You didn't hear?We are all full, not accepting any more people at this time

I'm a born and raised Montanan. (several generations) I figure we should welcome guys like stillhunterman. Hopefully some huggers will leave making more room. mtmuley

Me and my family have been in process of moving to northwest MT. We like it so far, but its not winter yet! We had to buy about 40 min outside of a larger city to afford property. It might be an option for you, and good luck in your search.
