NR with Application Questions...

LAST EDITED ON Mar-11-13 AT 02:40PM (MST)[p]I'm not interested in non productive comments, so don't bother. I'm a college student and resident of Idaho that is brand new to applying to other states. Cost is a part of the equation. I'm interested in elk and mule deer only for now.

As a NR, do I have to purchase a license to apply in Montana? If so, what would I roughly be out the door to apply for elk and deer?

Also, If I start to build points for deer, are those points only good for that specific hunt/unit or will they apply to say, any deer tag in the state?

I'm looking to put in for good tags (not the best one) with odds that are in the 10% or less range as I can't afford to make a trip for a mediocre tag. If I draw a good one, it's much easier to justify re-arranging my fall. Any advice on units to research for elk and mule deer? I appreciate any helpful responses.

As a non resident, the "general" combo tag/license is about $950 which you pay for upfront when you apply. If you don't draw the "general" combo tag you get most of it back. Once you draw the general tag, you can apply for special draws. The last couple years I think they didn't even sell out of their combo tags so your odds of drawing it are pretty high. There are quite a few good areas for muleys to put in for that hold OK bucks. For elk I would apply for the ranchers trespass vouchers, or block management I think its called. Ranchers open up their land to hunt on, so many people at one time get to hunt it.

The "bonus point" isn't necessary because more than likely will draw the combo tag this year if you put in.

One thing I LOVE about MT is for us archery hunters if we don't fill our tag during archery, we can come back in November and hunt with a rifle :)

Also, to help you with your other questions:
MT has a preference point system for the combo tags and a bonus point system for the limited draws. The preference points have not been needed since the fees went up.
The bonus points are exactly that, bonus points (additional chances in the drawing - no guarantee of tags). Deer points are good for any of the limited units.

However; MT does not have a lot of limited units for deer. Most can be hunted on the general tag. Like a lot of states, muley populations are down, especially in the areas I know on the eastern half of the state.

In my opinion, MT is not a good state if you want to put out minimal $$ and only hunt on a limited entry unit. If that is your goal, you may want to look at other states. If you want to explore and maybe have a good hunt and maybe not.......... MT is a good place to get a tag.

When I was a college student, I was a MT resident. I am thankful for that.

Good luck!
