I have seen some info on others threads but didn't want to hijack it. I am a NR wanting to hunt Mt this year or next, baby coming end of Aug will make it tough this year. I have got the packet from Mt but am still lost. What does the elk deer combo get you? Is it for mule deer or whitetail? Any help would e great in some laymans terms for me.

General elk tag, deer tag covers MD and WT in some areas, other areas are draw only for MD.SO you get your two tags and then you apply for special draw tags if you want to try to hunt those areas that are draw only,OR you just get the combo and find an area thats open to general tags and hunt it.

So if I don't get a draw then it for the general areas only for both mule deer and elk? If I do get a draw unit will I have to pay more?

Your deer tag is good for MD or WT. The tags are also good for the whole season. If you bow hunt and don't fill your tags, you can use the same tags to rifle hunt.

WRONG Deer tags arnt good for md and wt across the state,MANY areas require you to apply for a md tag.Check the regs, when they finally come out,and see what your area allows,if it is a draw only for md then you have to apply,if you get it you cant hunt MD in any other area.Im just outide Helena and every area surrounding us is draw only for MD,dont assume your deer tag will let you hunt md anywhere in the state. And yes you have to pay extra to apply for limited tags.

But do you have to pay extra for a limited draw if you are drawn? Also are there many general areas to hunt elk and mule deer on the western side of the state?

There are lots of general hunt areas, many have sex and antler restrictions. For both deer and elk.
For the limited draw, the bonus point is $20 plus drawing fee and whatever. Cost me $31.01. That's what it cost for the draw, successful or not.

Depending on yopu definition of the Western side of the state, I'd say that yes, it is mostly draw only for mule deer these days. Check the regs VERY carefully. mtmuley
