I cam across a video made by Montana Wild and they stated that they hunted a piece of State Land that was 4000 acres. They said it was home to Mule/Whitetail deer and Elk. The video seamed like the land was fairly flat with the mountains in the back ground. They referred to the Video as The Copper Ranch. Has any one heard of this?

Episode 2 one of them is walking around with his orange tucked into his backpack...FAIL ILLEGAL....morons are lucky some warden hasnt seen their little videos

I was hoping it was true.. But the way you say it makes me feel as if it is total BS. It looked promising. i guess it is back to studying forest service maps.

Also do you or anyone know anything about the firearm restriction on forest land. I talked to the people at the Forest Service today and they told me that you cant discharge a firearm within 150 yards of a road or trail. Does that "road or trail" mean like logging roads or just specifically mark hiking trails and vehicle road ways?

Thanks

I'm not a resident but have hunted there a lot. I have only seen the State land checker boarded with deeded land.

I think he may be talking about some BLM land out near Billings. As for as the firearms rule, that probably gets broken everyday. The hunting regs have details about shooting from a road also, mtmuley

Just curious...WhyTF are you talking to the USFS about Game and Fish regulations?

Do you call a plumber to fix your car?

Apparently you must.

Whoever you talked to at the USFS office doesnt know chit from clay about hunting regulations. Further, they're completely out of their jurisdiction pretending they "know" the rules.

I've already told you...head out to Spurgin Road for FISH AND GAME information, questions, etc. Or at least give them a call...its a great regional office.

Also, do yourself a favor and look over the MTFWP website. They have a hunt planner, all the important regulations listed, FAQ's, etc. Its not the job of people on a website to spoon-feed you your mush.

You've been led to water...and I cant believe you're just standing there lock-legged wondering what to do next.

Sorry for pissing in your cheerios. They were simple questions.

To answer your question, I have looked over the MTFWP page and I have gone to your so called "Great" regional office.

Well your "Great" regional office SENT me to USFS. The said to me and I quote "USFS has different rules for there land". So I went to USFS purchased a map and drove to check an area out.

At the area I saw a restricted zone that wasn't very clear in its description. I then called USFS to ask a question about it. USFS stated that it meant that I or a person had to stick to the trail system and that no firearms could be discharged. I then ask where they could be discharged. USFS stated outside the restricted zone and 150 yards form any road or trail.

This would be why I asked that question BuzzH, Because it did not make sense to me and why would i then go back to your "Great" regional office when they sent me the USFS.

As for the land question I asked about. I have been looking at maps and the State Land seams to be a small portion. That is why I asked to double check that I wasn't looking over something. YES AGAIN I could have call MTFWP to ask them but they probably would have sent me to see someone else, like then had did before.

So there is my explanation.

I do agree most state lands are fragmented up through out the state is the general rule of thumb. However, there are certain areas where theres more than just 1 or 2 squares put together, I do know of 1 spot that has over 20 square miles continous in pretty much a square block. Happened under the land swap afew years ago selling off certain state sections and the state purchased a ranch with that to make a big block of state lands.

Imorrison,

Let me guess, you're talking about the Rattlesnake Wilderness and the corridor out of Missoula. If thats the case, you need to specify as there are different firearm regulations there.

Your first post didnt mention anything specific about the area you were in...only asking if you had to be 150 yards off any road on any FS land to shoot a deer. The fact is, behind gated roads, you can stand in the middle of the road and blaze your way into glory. You arent breaking any law. In almost all the rest of the State, you only have to be off the normal right-of-way to fire a weapon, including highways, county roads, etc.

Its all in the regulations...and I could find it 1 minute on the MTFWP website or with a 2 minute phone call to the FWP.

I'm also assuming you likely strolled into the MTFWP office and chatted it up with the front desk help. If you have specific regulation questions...Dan Curtin is your source, and I dont care if its info about the Rattlesnake corridor regs, or any other state regs...he knows. Biology related stuff...Mike Thompson, Jamie Jonkel, Jay Kolb are your guys for the Missoula area.
