I was lucky enough to draw out for the crazy mountains this year for mountain goat, I'm not trying to get any top secret hunting spots just looking for a place to start I am planning a preseason scouting trip just trying to gather all the information I can thanks.

Judas!!

Every time I drive from billings to Bozeman I look up at those hills and think "no wonder they call them the crazies.

I've spent the night in big timber canyon and there were goats above us on the hill. Waaaaaaaaay above us.

Good luck on your hunt. Post some pics.

Ive had the same thoughts as Stubaby.

Congrats on the tag. Aught to be a good time. Seems like you need to keep an eye on weather for that hunt, think those little hills get some snow to deal with once the storms start rolling in later in the fall.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-13 AT 04:09PM (MST)[p]Its about 7 miles back in on the trailhead and you'll be able to start hunting from there. Since they've given out a ton of tags the success has dropped way down. If you don't have horses I'd pay to have you dropped off/picked off far enough in. Yes hunt the first part of the season, when the snow comes you might get stuck in or not be able to access the goats...plus it can turn deadly. My advice get an outfitter, this is not a typical Montana DIY hunt...lots go home empty handed.

HAD THE TAG LAST YEAR WAITED UNTIL MID NOVEMBER ALMOST ATE MY TAG BIGTMBER CANYON HOLDS ALOT OF GOATS HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU HAVE TO HUNT?

horns were 8 1/2 inchs and was a7 1/2 year old billie passed up bigger early in the season but they didn't have good hair.

I will have most all the month of September not every day but whenever I need to. That's an awesome goat with some good looking hair on him!

I Think for bigger horn your better off early, on my hunt we couldn't access any thing on the north slopes too much ice and snow bigtimber canyon has good access even witn snow hunting in September the goats will be shaded up during the most part of the day don't overlook areas down lower on the mountain early on in the season we saw a lot of goats real low, later they were towards the top in the wind blown areas goodluck.

They will be rutting early, watch for billies down near creek bottoms on overloooking cliffs with a nanny cornered.

just a little info on the rut goats will start rutting mid nov into dec so if your going to hunt the rut don't go early.
