Non-resident draw

LAST EDITED ON Nov-25-13 AT 12:49PM (MST)[p]Just deer or elk/deer combo? General unit or limited draw?

I was looking at tresspass fee hunts on private ranches.Do not know where the one was that I looked at.Do mule deer and elk use the same habitat ?

You might want to check out the Block Management Programs if you are looking for private ranches. Otherwise, combination tag will work.

I have been out to Colorado twice so far.Last time was 2006.I now have 7 points for built up.2 kids in college has taken its toll on extra money laying around. But now looking into private ranch DIY or minimal guiding.Looking into Montana for Elk or Ks,Iowa and such for deer.Would love to hunt with Tiffany Lokosky LOL

To answer this question: No points are needed. There are left over tags after the drawing

For limited areas where the quality of game is better, non-res odds are long, points or not. We have a "bonus" point system, not to be confused with preference points. That being said, the general areas in Montana hold some quality animals. mtmuley

Not sure if it works the same way it did or not, but back when I hunted there in the 90s, sometimes NR odds were better than Residents. For example: My brother put in for a moose tag in southwest Montana unit. Our resident friend said he had been putting in for decades without getting drawn and there were very long odds for him. However, at that time, they had one tag that was designated for NRs. Only 10 NR applied for that tag and my brother was drawn. Got a huge bull too!

Residents always have better draw odds than nonresidents. Nonresidents can be awarded up to 10% of the tags. However, they aren't guaranteed anything.

That is a change then, because back then, I called and was told that there was 1 moose tag designated for NR.

Yes, the "NR's can be awarded up to 10%" Goes back to the current draw system Implemented by MT Legislature. Right around 1990.
Never more then 10% often a lot less.

_Also be aware if you apply for the big 3 to know what the real draw odds are VS what is in the booklet. They are roughly 400% worse on moose and 500% on sheep and goat than they publish in the booklet because of the resident to nonresident application ratio and then the 10% cap.
Nonresidents are limited to 10% maximum but make up around half of all applicants in the units that they are only allowed to apply in. It is kind of a dirty little secret.

Txhunter , I've read your replies on a couple of hunting sites and I just want to thank you for being informative and to the point staying away from politics and keeping on topic,

Well I did the Colorado pref point as usual.I just wish the Rockies were 1/2 the distance.I would at least get out there every couple of years on left over tags possibly. But at 2000 miles and $3.75/gal gas at 12 mpg it is a bit costly even with 2 people splitting the cost.We also have been applying for Maine Moose the last 3 yrs. That is only 8-12 hrs depending on where we would go.Thanks for responses so far.

Did not know what that was suppose to mean but I was told if you are going to hunt Elk do not expect to hunt MD at the same time.I definitely do not want to spend extra money on NR license fees if I will be wasting my time.
