Flint Creek Range

I live up in Region 1, but have been looking at other regions in Montana that offer better elk numbers and success. Ive somewhat narrowed down my area to hunt districts 212/213. Mainly because I have a better chance of having a b tag for cow elk and its within a couple hours drive. I'm looking at hunting some of the roadless areas west of Deerlodge/Anaconda.

Does anyone know how the mule deer populations are in this range? Is it worth applying for a special buck tag? I think I might have better deer hunting in Region 1. I plan on elk hunting opening week to catch elk while still on forest service and maybe thanksgiving week too. How is the elk hunting pressure away from roads and trails? Thanks for any direction.

I've never seen a mule deer of any size in there, decent numbers though.

The elk hunting's tough in there. Tons of elk, but every year more and more are staying on the Angelo Ranch year around. Also keep an eye on the regs, they're talking about making a big chunk of that special permit only for bulls.

Randy - Wonderful! Not what I wanted to hear. Thanks for information though. I may look further south in Region 3 for elk and deer hunt closer to home in Region 1. Do you know which units the fwp is considering for a special bull permit? Thx - Preston

It's more or less everything north of boulder creek and west of gold creek in 212. Mostly the heavily roaded stuff.

I don't want to try to deter you from chasing elk there, there's definitely a ##### load of them. Especially compared to the rest of region 1 and 2. It just gets frustrating with the amount of pressure it gets and having all the elk getting pushed onto the big ranches.
