Points Only Question

Is it possible to apply for points only for Elk without having to purchase an Elk Combination lic for $846?

My wife and I have added twins to the family recently, along with dropping $600 recently for my WY Elk tag, purchasing points in Arizona two weeks ago, and Utah points coming due shortly, I would rather not have to drop $846 plus to accumulate points for Elk in Montana.

The answer depends on the type of point you are talking about.

If you are talking preference points (which are used in the general draw), those can be purchased for $50 without applying. Preference point only option opens July 1st and rune through September I believe. Given the fact Montana typically does not sell out of NR elk tags...seems like a waste of $50 if you ask me.

If you are talking bonus points (which are used for limited entry permits), you must apply for the elk tag and buy the $20 bonus point at time of application as well. You can select an 80% refund of the general elk tag if you are not successful drawing the limited entry permit and keep the bonus point.
