Opheim Aera Mule Deer

I was wondering if anybody has hunted mule deer near the Opheim Aera? It looks like there is a far amount of BLM land around that area. My dad is in his late 50's and I would like to do a hunt with him. I am looking for a DIY hunt that he could enjoy.

Any help or comments on the area is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-15 AT 09:10AM (MST)[p]The tough winters in the past( This winter has been an open winter though) and hunting pressure due the Mo. Breaks being almost devoid of mature bucks in places has put a dent in that Opheim area population. Many guys who used to hunt in the Breaks now head north to that general area.

Having said that I know every year there are good mature books taken up there and have seen quite a few myself. You also have the option of running into some stud prairie whitetails in country that isn't classic whitetail country.

I would look at maps of the all the large areas of public land north and west of Opheim. There won't be deer behind every bush because there are hardly and bushes but you can find a shooter if hunt long enough.

Your mileage may vary.

I've been hanging around this area for a long time. Nemont is right on, a few years ago it was all good deer hunting. Opheim South, North and East is White tail country. More private property and crops, CRP, etc. To the West and SW is badland stuff. Bitter Creek, State, and BLM. Open country for sure, and fun stuff to hunt.
Winter of 2010-11 was devstating on all wildlife. F,W and P apparently had little knowledge. They still had doe permits???
Now it is antlers only, a few years to late.
Again, it's fun county, give it a try.

Thanks for the replys!

I was thinking the badlands/breaks areas between there and Malta. I think that 2010-2011 winter put the hurt on a lot of areas. The area I've hunted in ND still has not recovered from that winter IMO.

Thanks,
