Elk Preferance Points

I am looking for some clarification on how to build elk and deer preferance points in Montana. Do I have to apply for the general Elk\deer combo? If so, how much money do I get back if all I want are to accumulate PP's and I am not actually going to hunt?

Thanks,

Brookhunter

You have to apply for the big game combo TAG first, which u will draw (don't bother paying 50 dollars for the preference point since they have leftovers every year). And then u will apply for a deer and elk PERMITS. These are under a bonus pint system. In order to build your points for these permits u must apply for a specific area and not draw- so in essence u have to apply for areas u know u can't draw. The combo tag is a general tag for the state is virtually over the counter right now. U can do this all at the same time when u apply and it will give u 3 choices at the end-- "if I don't draw my elk or deer permit I wish to receive 80% of my money back for the combo tag--" if I don't draw my elk permit I wish to retain my deer portion of the combo tag and get a refund on the elk portion. (A little less than 400 dollars)"---"if I don't draw my elk or deer permit I wish to keep the combo tag (general for the state). As u can see it will cost u a couple hundred dollars every year to build points. If u don't plan on hunting for several years it might worth to buy a few preference points for the combo tag because these could eventually start selling out on the first draw which I doubt will happen for awhile. The way I learned a lot of this is just get on the website and go throu the process of applying and u will see more clearly how everything works. The regs can be very complicated.

Preference points are a waste of money. Consider bonus points if you apply for special permits. mtmuley

Montana has a a preference point system for the combo tags (deer/elk/big game combo) which is irrelevant if they undersubscribed . And a bonus point system elk/deer permits. There is a difference between the two.

wyo33 - thanks for your clarification of the preference points system. I would like to start building points to hunt one of the Missouri Breaks units.

Thanks,
