Building points for kids??

My 17yo has 1 point for goat and moose, 2 for sheep as a nonresident. He really appears to have the hunting bug and will continue even after I can't climb those mountains. For around $200 a year(and rising in the future I'm sure), is it worth the dismal chance of drawing one of these tags in his lifetime? Even with the terrible odds, I pulled a goat tag a few years ago and my partner got a moose tag.

Since MT is a bonus point not a preference I'd say yes.

But realistically it would probably be cheaper for your kids to go to Canada and hunt by the time they draw a tag in MT.

If you expect to ever draw, then no. If you don't mind paying for a 200 dollar lottery ticket, go for it.

I wouldn't be surprised if theres no longer a moose or sheep season in Montana in 20 years.

That said, every year somebody with less than 1% odds does draw. Can't draw if you're not in the hat.

I got in on the ground floor for the draws in Mt( and a lot of other states) and have 15 moose and sheep points, I don't buy lottery tickets for anything and justify the cost this way for myself. The draws have been good to me over the years and it is sad to see how the cost of applying and worsening odds of drawing will keep my son from going on all the great adventures on public land that I have gotten too. I guess hunting is like a lot of things in America and this is the first generation that will not have things better than their parents.

The thing to remember is the goat tags have decent draw odds if you settle for an average unit, so it's worth the cost to me. the sheep tags have awful odds but the quality is as good as it gets so it's worth the cost to me. moose isn't worth the cost in my opinion.

One thing is for sure if you don't put your kids in today their chances at hunting before they're 95 are slim. only you can decide if it's worth the cost to you. I prefer to see the glass half full on hunting in the future even though I have my doubts, if you take the negative attitude and give up no matter what happens you'll be screwed.
