Figuring out the draw

Hi all, some friends and I are looking to buy a preference point or two. With an eye towards hunting a few years down the road. Could anyone give me the guide for idiots on Montana preference points. If I read the regs correctly you need to put in for a tag every other year to retain your points. Does this mean buying a hunting license to enter the draw on those years? Anything else unique to the Montana system? Thanks for any help.

this is the first year Montana has a program where u can buy bonus pts after the draw. Intially you would have to apply for the tag and add preference point (50$) to the total if you weren't drawn. I would go through the site or call Montana FWP for more info

LAST EDITED ON Jul-21-17 AT 12:30PM (MST)[p]There are 2 point systems in Mt. The preference point system for non-resident general combo tags and the bonus points system for LE tags. You need to apply for a general combo license to be able to also apply or a limited entry tag. If you are looking to apply for a general tag next year you "could" buy a preference point and guarantee yourself to get drawn next year. (That said, Unless things greatly change in tag allocation or number of applicants, You do not need to buy a preference point to guarantee a general tag from the draw). As far as retaining bonus points...the new system of allowing a person to buy a bonus point without apply should simply the process of building points. (And add some gas to the point race)

Thanks for clearing that up. We are going to go ahead and buy a point this year with an eye towards the future.
